Job Definition
The City of Superior is seeking a full-time, limited-term, fully benefitted, Light Equipment Operator to work at the City Landfill. Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License. Landfill employees must obtain and maintain a valid class B Commercial Drivers License within twelve (12) months of hire. The City will assist with offering a CDL training program upon hire.
Limited-term: The duration of this limited term position is expected to last until December 31, 2028, at which time the landfill is projected to close.
Location of work: City Landfill, 107 Moccasin Mike Road
Wages: $23.90 - $29.87/hour (2026 wage range)
Starting wage is $23.90. Pay grade is made up of 10 wage steps. Employee would move to next step in the grade on anniversary date of hire with the City if meeting expectations of position. Each wage step is approximately 2.5%.
Hours: 40 hours/week; 7:00 am -3:00 pm Monday-Friday
May be required to work on some City holidays (will receive pay for holiday plus time-and-a-half for hours worked).

DEFINITION:
Performs a variety of tasks requiring manual labor as well as skilled work of a varied nature in the operation of motorized equipment categorized as light equipment; collects and disposes windblown material, does related work as required. Maintains and cleans facility and equipment. Assists in recycling activities. Cuts grass by using a power mower, roto-tiller and weed whacker.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Employees in this class perform a variety of tasks involving manual labor as well as in the operation of multi-purpose equipment requiring a degree of skill, especially in working grades and in operating equipment more efficiently and safely. Employees in this class are trained to operate the full range of light equipment but may be assigned to operate specific equipment for their assignment. Standard procedures are followed and the work is inspected periodically for safety and economy of operation by a supervisor. The Light Equipment Operator differs from the higher class of Medium Equipment Operator based upon the equipment operated, although, a Light Equipment Operator may train to operate higher rated equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:
Training and experience: Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be:
Equivalent to high school graduation or possession of GED certification and six months experience performing laboring tasks in the operation of road equipment and in road construction or maintenance.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Driver License Requirement: Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License. Landfill employees must obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercials Drivers License within twelve (12) months of hire. City of Superior offers CDL training program upon hire.
Residency Requirement: No residency requirement.
Background Investigation Requirement: Must pass a background investigation as required by U.S. Department of Transportation standards.
Post Job Offer Medical Examination Requirement: Must pass medical examination as required for the occupation unit including a lifting capacity test.
Drug/Alcohol Testing Requirement: Must pass pre-employment drug screen and will be subject to drug/alcohol testing as prescribed by U.S. Department of Transportation standards.

Single: $142.66 (2 deductions of $71.33)

The City has a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA). The 2026 annual deductibles are: $3,400 for Single coverage & $6,800 for Employee+1 or Family coverage. The City will contribute $1,700/$3,400 of that annual deductible into your Health Savings Account (HSA) for 2026, which will carry over if not used and is always yours to use until spent. There is no proration on the deductible or the City's contribution.
2) WI Retirement System (WRS) - The WRS is among the best funded and best managed public pension systems in the country!: You will be required to make contributions to your WRS benefit at 7.20% (in 2026) of your gross wages. The City will contribute the balance of this benefit, 7.20% in 2026 (14.4% going into your retirement!).
3) Life Insurance: To be effective the first of the month following 30 days from the date of hire. Basic coverage (= 1 x annual salary) paid by City (must enroll to receive), ability to purchase four additional units of coverage (= 4 x annual salary) plus spouse/dependent coverage.
4) Paid Time Off:
Sick Leave: For newly hired employees, will accumulate one sick leave day/month and is available immediately as accrued.
5) Vacation: For newly hired employees, seven days of vacation will be prorated from date of hire for use immediately.
6) Paid Parental Leave: Up to six weeks of paid parental leave is available to employees to use following the birth or adoption of an employees child, or placement of a foster child.
7) Holidays: Eleven holidays off with pay each calendar year plus three floating holidays.
8) Longevity pay when eligible as follows:
After five (5) years of service, employees will receive $.20 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After ten (10) years of service, employees will receive $.30 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After fifteen (15) years of service, employees will receive $.45 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After twenty (20) years of service, employees will receive $.65 per hour in addition to their base salary;
After twenty five (25) years of service, employees will receive $.90 per hour in addition to their base salary.
