Massimilla & Schranze, part of The Hanover Insurance Company Staff Counsel organization in New England, is seeking an experienced litigation attorney to join our growing team.Position OverviewRole: Handle the defense of automobile and general liability personal injury cases from receipt until conclusion by dismissal, settlement, or trial. Manage your caseload independently while receiving support from attorneys, trial specialists, paralegals, secretaries, and other staff. Admission in good standing to the Massachusetts Bar is required; additional New England licenses are a plus.In This Role, You Will:Engage in all facets of litigation, including preparing pleadings, responding to discovery, interviewing witnesses, and attending court hearings, depositions, settlement conferences, mediations, arbitrations, and/or trial.Research legal issues, evaluate liability, damages, and exposure, and communicate findings to clients and Claims professionals.Communicate regularly and timely with clients and Claims professionals regarding case status and resolution strategies.Proactively move cases forward toward resolution.Participate in case roundtable discussions with Staff Counsel managers, Claims managers, adjusters, and other stakeholders.Negotiate settlements and prepare settlement agreements.Collaborate with Hanover attorneys, paralegals, and support staff to achieve organization objectives.What You Need to ApplyExperience litigating automobile, general liability, and Personal Injury Protection claims.Licensed in good standing with the Massachusetts Bar.Valid driver's license, acceptable motor vehicle record, and ability to maintain confidentiality.Willingness to travel within Massachusetts as needed.Ability to work in a team environment with attorneys, adjusters, claims professionals, and support staff.Computer literacy (MS Word, Lexis/Westlaw, email, and calendar management).Advocacy: Solid knowledge and ability to defend or plead in moderately complex cases.Negotiation Skills: Consistently influences claim outcomes through effective negotiation techniques.Communication: Strong ability to convey legal concepts in clear, layman's terms.Decision Making: Capable of arriving at determinations in complex situations after thorough consideration of facts and law.Organization Skills: Effectively prioritizes work to maximize productivity.Investigative Skills: Proficient at following inquiries step‑by‑step and examining evidence with accuracy.Legal Research: Skilled at locating and interpreting cases, statutes, and regulations.Courtroom Skills: Demonstrates proper decorum, attire, and knowledge of courtroom rules.Career Development: Takes proactive responsibility for professional growth and maintains necessary skill levels.Trial Skills: Experienced presenting evidence and legal arguments to judge or jury; prior trial experience preferred.Business/Industry Knowledge: Understands insurance policies, practices, trends, and basic P&C principles.Agility and Adaptability: Resilient in unexpected challenges and maintains course.Mentorship: Willingness and ability to mentor and train others.Career DevelopmentWe support your career growth through on‑the‑job experiences, personalized coaching, and robust learning and development programs at every level.BenefitsWe offer comprehensive benefits to help you be healthy, build financial security, and balance work and home life.Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance401(k) with company matchPTOCultural Awareness Day in support of IDEOn‑site medical/wellness center (Worcester only)EEO StatementThe Hanover values diversity in the workplace and among our customers.
