Position Summary The Living and Leisure Mentor offers support to VUnited Scholars related to independent living components of the program. Guidance and assistance will be provided in navigating residence living situations necessary for successful independence, such as laundry room cleaning, etc. Additionally, the Mentor engages Scholars in active integration socially within the university by assisting with their needs and participating in various extracurricular activities on campus as well as with academic support in the evenings. This individual is responsible for conflict resolution and social facilitation among students and peers.

The Living and Leisure Mentor is responsible for 1-2 weekly on-duty evenings as well as weekend supervision and support of students within the VUnited Scholars program. Other responsibilities include:

  • On Duty supervision in St. Marys Hall and across campus
  • Independent living guidance
  • Social activities coordination and engagement
  • Fitness scheduling
  • Academic support

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

60% INDEPENDENT LIVING GUIDANCE

  • Weekly On-Duty evenings from 7:00 PM - 11:00 PM in St. Marys Hall or location where majority of VUnited Scholars are present.
  • On-Duty weekends to on-campus and off-campus extracurricular activities.
  • On campus Living Advisor.
  • Offers support with laundry room cleanliness, room organization.
  • Assists students with dining hall socialization and meals when needed.
  • Assists students with weekend scheduling and structured free time.
  • Develops a sense of unity among residents by facilitating the development of relationships among residents.
  • Creates a friendly, respectful, and considerate living environment.
  • Plans and leads activities for VUnited Scholars students including Evening Study Groups, workshops, evening circle discussions, and other social events.
  • Holds floor meetings to disseminate information, discuss concerns, and collect feedback.
  • Communicates information to residents in a timely and appropriate manner.

20% SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT

  • Assists with planning social activities for students and mentors.
  • Determines Scholar interests and abilities to advise appropriate activities.
  • Communicates effectively with VUnited Scholars students, mentors, and staff about the activities and events available through Student Life and other departments on campus.
  • Accompanies Scholars to events and/or assigns mentors for various activities, club meetings, intramurals, lectures, or other social events scholars can participate in or join on weeknights and weekends.

20% ACADEMIC, FITNESS, AND HEALTH SUPPORT

  • Assists with homework in evenings when on-duty and when needed by students.
  • Accompanies Scholars to physical fitness centers on occasion.
  • Advises Scholars on healthy eating choices.

Requirements

  • Strong organizational, time management, and relationship management skills with demonstrated ability to work as a team player.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and efficiently with students and staff.
  • The individual must have a deep commitment to the College of Professional Studies, to the VUnited Scholars Program, and to the Universitys Catholic/Augustinian heritage and the advancement of its mission, and to serving the needs of a diverse community.
