    Description

    Job Summary

    The Locomotive Engineer Training Program prepares candidates to become qualified Locomotive Engineers through a comprehensive training program that includes classroom instruction, on-the-job training, railroad operating rules, equipment operations, safety procedures, and technical knowledge.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Operate locomotives safely while following railroad operating rules and regulations.
    • Perform pre-trip inspections, operational tests, and equipment checks.
    • Monitor train controls, gauges, air pressure, speed, and other operating systems.
    • Control train movement using throttle and braking systems.
    • Observe track conditions and respond to obstacles or hazards.
    • Communicate with conductors and operations personnel regarding schedules and operational updates.
    • Troubleshoot equipment issues and respond to emergency situations.
    • Complete extensive training covering railroad operations, safety procedures, equipment, and regulations.
    • Participate in ongoing annual certification and qualification requirements.
    • Work rotating shifts, irregular schedules, weekends, holidays, and on-call assignments.

    Required Qualifications

    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Ability to learn and apply railroad operating rules and technical procedures.
    • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent attention to detail and situational awareness.
    • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
    • Ability to memorize and apply technical information.
    • Ability to work irregular schedules and changing assignments.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Some college education.
    • Customer service experience.
    • Mechanical, diesel, automotive, or electrical experience.
    • Experience operating commercial vehicles, trains, heavy equipment, or similar machinery.
