Summary

 

The Logistics Route Planner is responsible for planning, optimizing, and maintaining efficient transportation routes to support on-time delivery, cost control, and operational efficiency. This role analyzes order volume, delivery requirements, fleet capacity, and geographic data to build optimal routes while collaborating closely with warehouse, dispatch, and transportation teams.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

• Design and optimize daily, weekly, and seasonal delivery routes
• Analyze delivery windows, stop density, mileage, fuel usage, and driver capacity
• Consolidate shipments to improve route efficiency and reduce transportation costs
• Create route plans using transportation management systems (TMS), routing software and internal reports
• Adjust routes in real time due to volume changes, weather, or operational constraints
• Communicate routes, schedules, and changes to drivers
• Monitor route performance and identify improvement opportunities
• Ensure routes comply with DOT regulations, hours-of-service, and company policies
• Maintain accurate routing data and documentation

Education and/or Experience

 

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field preferred.
• 2+ years of experience in route planning, dispatch, logistics, or transportation.
• Proven experience creating and optimizing delivery routes.
• Strong understanding of geographic routing and transportation constraints

 

Required Skills

 

• Experience with routing and optimization tools (TMS, GPS routing software, Excel).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple routes and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent communication skills for working with drivers, warehouse staff, and leadership.
• Attention to detail and data accuracy

 

Preferred Skills

 

• Experience in manufacturing, warehouse, or distribution operations.
• Knowledge of DOT compliance and hours-of-service regulations.
• Experience with last-mile or regional transportation planning.
• Advanced Excel or data analysis skills.

 

Language Skills

 

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

 

Mathematical Skills

 

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, percent, and to draw and interpret graphs.

 

Reasoning Ability

 

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and/or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
