CLASS TITLE: HIGH SCHOOL FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER

BASIC FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the Principal, provide an educational program and teach one or more classes in foreign language to students in grades 9-12 as part of a high school secondary teaching assignment; develop, implement and present lesson plans according to established curriculum standards and requirements.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

• Provide an educational program of foreign language and instructional activities to one or more classes of high school students; assure educational program and related learning activities comply with established curriculum, standards, requirements, laws and regulations. E
• Teach students in various areas of foreign language; provide instruction to enhance student skills and knowledge. E
• Provide instruction and learning activities to facilitate and enhance student understanding and competency in an assigned foreign language. E
• Plan, implement and lead classroom discussions to enhance the speaking and comprehension skills of foreign language students; provide effective learning experiences utilizing techniques to develop communication skills. E
• Develop, implement and present lesson plans according to established curriculum standards and requirements; coordinate and oversee student drills, practices and assignments in the classroom. E
• Review, analyze and integrate required instructional materials with lesson plans and learning activities; assure student assignments adapt with instructional materials; provide students with homework assignments. E
• Provide differentiated instructional opportunities for all students, including special populations, such as English Language Learners and students with special needs. E
• Instruct students in citizenship, communication skills and other general elements of the course of study specified in State law and district regulations and procedures. E
• Distribute and collect student assignments and supplementary instructional materials; develop, prepare and administer oral and written tests; grade tests and assignments; record grades and maintain student records and files; prepare report cards; prepare progress reports as required. E
• Provide individualized and small group instruction and tutoring to assure curriculum and learning activities adapt with the needs of individual students; assist students by answering questions, providing proper examples, support, friendly attitude and general guidance. E
• Evaluate student performance and progress in foreign language skills including speaking, reading and writing in accordance with level of instruction; adjust activities and materials to meet student skill levels and progress. E
• Observe and control student behavior in accordance with district policies and procedures; take attendance and maintain related records; monitor students during outdoor activities as required; resolve student discipline issues and refer major discipline problems to appropriate administrator. E
• Provide a variety of learning activities to develop student understanding and appreciation of cultures where designated foreign languages are used. E
• Identify student needs and collaborate with administrators and staff in assessing and assisting students with resolving health, attitude and learning issues and conflicts. E
• Instruct students concerning the proper use and care of electronic equipment used in foreign language instruction; make minor adjustments and request repairs to equipment as needed. E
• Collaborate with school administrators in establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior to facilitate an orderly and productive classroom environment; confer with parents and school counselors concerning the academic progress of individual students. E
• Work with students in establishing and maintaining an effective and motivating environment for language learning through displays, bulletin boards and interest centers. E
• Participate in curriculum development programs for the school; provide input concerning district-wide curriculum development as directed. E
• Communicate with personnel, administrators, parents and outside agencies to exchange information, coordinate activities and resolve issues or concerns. E
• Operate a variety of office and classroom equipment including a copier, overhead projector, computer and assigned software; utilize tape recorders and various other audio-visual equipment as required. E
• Monitor inventory levels of classroom and instructional supplies; order, receive and maintain adequate inventory levels of supplies. E
• Maintain classroom in a safe, clean and orderly condition; lock and unlock doors; report needs for maintenance and repairs. E
• Attend and participate in various meetings and in-services as required; maintain competence through self-selected professional growth activities. E
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Practices, methods and procedures involved in the preparation of instructional materials.

Curriculum standards, requirements, interpretation and application in foreign language instruction.

Areas of instruction in foreign language, including aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing.

Fluency in sign language for American Sign Language classes.

Extensive vocabulary and correct oral and written usage, grammar, spelling and punctuation of English and a designated second language.

Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of assigned students.

ABILITY TO:

Provide an educational program of foreign language and instructional activities to one or more classes of high school students.

Teach students in various areas of foreign language such as aural comprehension, speaking, reading and writing utilizing established course of study adopted by the Board of Education.

Develop and implement lesson plans according to established curriculum standards and requirements.

Provide instruction to enhance student skills and knowledge.

Plan, implement and lead classroom discussions to enhance the speaking, hearing and comprehension skills of foreign language students

Develop, prepare and administer oral and written tests.

Grade tests and assignments and assess student performance and progress.

Read, write, comprehend and speak assigned foreign language fluently with accurate pronunciation and intonation.

Teach students who are learning sign language as a second language, and/or introduce sign language to deaf students when it is an American Sign Language (ASL)class.

Use ASL to communicate effectively in both formal and informal situations, demonstrating fluency and correct articulation, and a wide range of vocabulary when it is an (ASL) class.

Use ASL for different communicative purposes, including narrating, requesting, persuading, comparing and contrasting when it is an (ASL) class.

Observe and control student behavior in accordance with district policies and procedures.

Interpret and apply applicable laws, codes, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with students.

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Plan and organize work.

Meet schedules and time lines.

Work independently with little direction.

Maintain student records and files and prepare report cards.

Operate standard office and classroom equipment including a computer and assigned software.
