SECONDARY MATHEMATICS TEACHER

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Under the direction of the school administrator and as part of an intermediate or high school teaching assignment, teach one or more classes of mathematics to students in grades 7-12, and assist in other school programs as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach concepts and skills in mathematics to intermediate or secondary students utilizing course of study adopted by the Board of Education, and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content if available. E
  • Instruct students in citizenship, basic communication skills, and other general elements of the course of study common to teachers, as specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district. E
  • Adapt mathematical material and methods to develop relevant sequential assignments that guide and challenge pupils. Develop lesson plans. E
  • Demonstrate, to the extent possible, mathematical concepts using models, chalkboard, overhead projects and other standard or teacher-prepared instructional aids as supplies are available. E
  • Adapt the curriculum to the needs of the students. E
  • Establish and maintain, with the cooperation and aid of the school administration, standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment. E
  • Indicate each student's progress in mathematical knowledge and skills by report cards and interim progress reports. Will prepare letters of recommendation for scholarships, college applications, etc., when requested by the student or a representative of a higher educational institute. E
  • Maintain professional competence through participation in in-service educational activities provided and supported by the District and in other professional growth activities selected by the teacher. E
  • Encourage pupils to think independently and to express original ideas.
  • Observe Code of Ethics (NEA and Title V).
  • Attend and participate in faculty and District meetings. E
  • Attend and participate in appropriate parent-faculty or community activities. E
  • Communicate with parents to interpret contemporary methods in teaching mathematics and with parents and school counselors to discuss the individual student's progress. E
  • Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude and learning problems. E
  • Assist in the supervision of pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a District level.
  • Supply necessary attendance data.
  • Share in the sponsorship and/or supervision of student activities.
  • Select and requisition books, instructional aids, and instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records.
  • Plan and coordinate the work of teacher aides or student teachers.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: Bachelor's degree with major or minor in mathematics. An exception may be made for the holder of a general credential.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Appropriate teaching credential.

  • Intermediate or high school classroom work environment.

Physical Abilities:

  • Seeing to monitor student classroom activities.
  • Hearing and speaking to exchange information and provide instruction.
