Job Overview

The Lower School Intervention Teacher is responsible for supporting the success of all students, but primarily students with individualized learning needs. This includes teaching and coaching students directly; partnering with teachers, families/caregivers, and administrators to plan for support; and collaborating around systems for student support more broadly.

With students, the Lower School Intervention Teacher will set goals, reteach material, monitor progress, and/or facilitate reflection. In alignment with the Peter Clark Center for Mind, Brain, & Education, the Lower School Intervention Teacher will support students in developing their metacognition as learners and building their academic and social-emotional skills.

With teachers, the Lower School Intervention Teacher serves as an instructional collaborator. This includes attending grade-level Team Meetings, assessing student strengths and challenges, developing and tracking intervention plans, and using social belonging and academic data to inform action and communications.

With parents, the Lower School Intervention Teacher is a critical liaison between the student, parent/caregiver, teachers, counselor, and deans. This includes clear documentation and communication.

As a member of the Breck community, the Lower School Intervention Teacher is expected to actively participate in the life of the Lower School and uphold the school's mission and values, contributing to a supportive and inclusive environment for all stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Work toward equitable academic excellence for each and every Lower School student.
  • Set academic and personal goals with students using a neurodevelopmental and cultural lens and in alignment with the principles of Mind, Brain, and Education (MBE) and culturally responsive practices.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group academic interventions in math and literacy.
  • Provide small group social-emotional interventions in partnership with the Guidance team.
  • Administer screening assessments for literacy and math.
  • Partner with the Child Study Team to implement appropriate Breck School accommodations.
  • Maintain accurate and updated files pertaining to the job, for all students in assigned groups.
  • Co-plan and teach a class in the Lower School for a short period of time when necessary at the discretion of the Lower School Director.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers in implementing interventions to promote student growth.
  • Attend Lower School Student Support Team meetings with the Lower School Deans, Counselor, and Division Director when asked.
  • Attend regular P-12 Student Support team meetings and Lower School Division Meetings.
  • Collaborate with Peter Clark and Melrose Centers to advance P-12 program coherence.
  • Oversee accommodations on internal and standardized assessments.
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality in execution of job responsibilities.
  • Participate in Lower School and All-School community life.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Special Education (Advanced degree preferred)
  • Minimum of five years of experience working with K-5 students in schools
  • Advanced training in the components of the science of reading
  • Understanding of the developmental stage of Lower School students and the cultural, social-emotional, and cognitive foundations of how children learn
  • Expertise in culturally-responsive and strengths-based instructional practices that support students with a range of learning needs, especially in the areas of executive functioning skills, social-emotional skills, math, and literacy
  • Expertise in implementing the latest standardized screeners to inform academic plans, and systems of support
  • Ability to recognize and respond to bias
  • Ability to work flexibly, collaboratively, and professionally with parents, students, faculty, and administration
  • Highly skilled in written and oral communication
  • Experience working in independent schools preferred
  • Ability to contribute to a positive work environment
