JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for providing nursing care to individuals served by the agency. Full Time

Position requires being on call.

MAJOR DUTIES

• Participates in nursing assessments of person served; participates in planning and IST meetings.

• Administers medical procedures as ordered by a physician, including but not limited to dispensing

medications, wound care, CBG readings, checking vital signs, etc.; documents results according to

agency policies and procedures and Alabama Board ofNursing's Administrative Code.

• Orders medications; maintains related reports; calls physicians to obtain refills; prepares medications

for individual leaving group homes for the weekend.

• Performs ongoing observations of the physical and behavioral status of persons served; reports

meaningful changes to the Director of Nursing; identifies situations requiring immediate action and

intervenes appropriately.

• Reports required medical supplies and equipment to the Director of Nursing.

• Attends annual exam with primary doctor of person served and specialists appointments to include;

however, not limited to: neurology, psychology, etc.

• Present at scheduled hospital admission and discharge of persons served.

• Accurately records complete medical data; reviews and maintains nursing records; submits monthly

and other periodic reports.

• Participates in in-service training to ensure the maintenance of certifications and licensures; attends

scheduled staff meetings.

• Provides Medication Administration Certification (MAC) training.

• Maintains certifications in CPI, MAS and as CPR, First Aid Instructor.

• Performs other duties and responsibilities deemed necessary; not otherwise specified.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

• Knowledge of current medical technology, procedures, and standards of care.

• Knowledge of patient assessment principles.

• Knowledge of behavioral patterns associated with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

• Knowledge of wound care principles.

• Skill in the provision of nursing care to patients.

• Skill in problem solving.

• Skill in prioritizing and planning.

• Skill in interpersonal relations.

• Skill in operating computers and job-related software programs.

• Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Director of Nursing supervises and assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor

spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of

the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include agency policies, Alabama Department of Mental Health (DMH) guidelines,

Medicaid guidelines, Alabama Board of Nursing Nurse Practice Act, NDP guidelines and American

Heart Association BLS/CPR guidelines. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation

in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

• The work consists of varied nursing duties. The variety of individual needs contribute to the

complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is to provide nursing care to individuals served by the agency.

Successful performance helps ensure the efficient and effective delivery of health services.

• Contacts are typically with individuals served, coworkers, other agency personnel, pharmacists,

physicians, parents/guardians/caregivers, and the general public.

• Contacts are typically to exchange information, motivate persons, resolve problems, and provide

services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

• The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to

successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made

• The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting,

standing, or stooping. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift

and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move over 25 pounds. Specific vision

abilities required for this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision,

depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

• The work is typically performed in an office and in group homes. The employee is exposed to

contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective

devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in

the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position,

usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar

position for one to two years.

• Certification as a Licensed Practical Nurse by the State Board of Nursing.

• Possession of a valid driver's license and good driving record.
