Lube Technician/Mechanic's Assistant

Days/Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM, 260 Workdays a year

Job Summary

The Lube Technician / Mechanic's Assistant supports the Hoquiam School District Transportation Department by assisting with the maintenance, repair, and safety of district vehicles, including school buses. This position contributes to the district's pillars of Meaningful Relationships, Engaged Learners, Adaptive Pathways, and Community Connections by ensuring safe, reliable transportation services that allow students to access learning opportunities and enable strong connections between schools and the community.

Key Responsibilities

Meaningful Relationships

  • Work collaboratively with the Shop Foreman, mechanics, and transportation staff to support daily operations.
  • Communicate professionally and respectfully with supervisors, peers, and other district staff.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the shop, parts room, and maintenance facilities.

Engaged Learners

  • Perform general tune-ups and routine maintenance to ensure buses and district vehicles operate safely and reliably.
  • Conduct oil and filter changes, brake adjustments, lubrication of chassis and wheel bearings, and other required maintenance.
  • Perform regular preventative maintenance and bus safety inspections to support student safety and timely transportation.

Adaptive Pathways

  • Repair and replace seats, glass, sheet metal, latches, and other vehicle body components and assemblies.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment including battery chargers, torque wrenches, grinders, timing lights, hoists, jacks, presses, headlight adjustment machines, air wrenches, and spark plug testers.
  • Complete work orders, maintenance records, and inventory documentation accurately using basic computer systems.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and assist with additional duties as assigned to meet district transportation needs.

  • Support safe and dependable transportation for students, staff, and community-related school activities.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records that support district accountability and compliance.
  • Contribute to a positive public perception of the district through professionalism and quality workmanship.

Qualifications

  • Valid Washington State driver's license; ability to obtain a Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements within 90 days of hire.
  • Basic experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy-duty and diesel vehicles and special vehicular equipment.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, peers, and students.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to get along well with co-workers and contribute to a team environment.
  • Must be self-motivated and dependable.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification required.
  • Must provide proof of citizenship or legal authorization to work (driver's license, birth certificate, Social Security card, passport, etc.).
  • Mandatory Drug and Alcohol Testing.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a mechanical shop environment and outdoors, with exposure to seasonal weather conditions. Employees may be exposed to chemicals, cleaning solvents, and mechanical fluids. Noise levels range from average to above average, particularly when operating power tools and maintenance equipment.

The position requires physical labor, including standing, bending, reaching, and heavy lifting. Conditions are not typically to a degree or duration that would cause marked discomfort or injury when proper safety procedures are followed.

Salary: $29.94 - $32.85

Benefits: State allocation toward dental, vision, and medical insurance; retirement benefits; 13 paid holidays; 12 sick leave days; 3 personal leave days and up to 25 vacation days.

Employment is contingent upon successful clearance of a Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint criminal history background check and a Sexual Misconduct background check.
