Machine Operator - 2nd Shift


Metals USA has an opening for a Machine Operator - 2nd Shift in the Mobile, AL facility. The Machine Operator performs advanced production activities requiring a demonstrated high level of skill and proficiency in material handling, production processes and multiple machine operation acquired through extended experience and training.


Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Positions work pieces for processing

  • Operates a combination of different machines to process work by cutting, burning, sawing, blasting, shearing, punching, grinding, bending, or pressing.

  • Uses gauges, calipers, squares, or rulers for measurement.

  • Determines processing specifications such as materials, cutting tools, location of cutting lines, dimensions, tolerances, and operational sequences by reviewing blueprints, work orders, tooling instructions or other written specifications.

  • Installs and aligns specified punches, cutting blades or other fixtures in machine bed using gauges, templates, feelers, shims, or hand tools.

  • Adjusts controls to set cutting speed, depth, and feed rates; and diagnoses problems and makes necessary adjustments.

  • Performs quality control inspections on finished product; for ISO-certified locations, performs In Process Quality Inspections

  • Coordinates and executes material handling of all inventories to be processed including operation of overhead crane.

  • Performs limited preventative maintenance, such as lubrication, cleaning and changing of parts.

  • May train less experienced workers and perform as lead in absence of group leader.

  • May mark identification on material/work pieces before processing.

  • May mark material after processing; store material for additional processing and/or shipping.

  • Restocks material.

  • Completes work order paperwork/documentation.

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Minimum 18 years of age

  • Measuring skills to read English & Metric systems, tape measure, caliper, gauges, or micrometer.

  • Mechanical aptitude and arithmetic skills to calculate and convert decimals and fractions.

  • Experience operating an overhead crane / forklift operator.

  • Proficient in the use of hand tools including grinder.

  • Computer Literacy; Microsoft Products, CAD Programming and ERP

  • Organized with attention to detail.

  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Physical Requirements


Occupation requires physical activity more than 66% of the time (> 5.5 hours per day)


 



  • Stand, walk, sit, handling/fingering, reach outward, reach above shoulder, climb, squat or kneel or bend.

  • Lift, carry, push and/or pull 51 -- 100 lbs. with assistance.

  • Must wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Steel-toed boots

  • Hard hats with chin strap; chin strap must be worn at all times while in the warehouse.

  • Protective eyewear

  • Hand protection

  • Arm guards/sleeves

  • Hearing protection if required by the hearing conservation program.
