Machine Shop Supervisor

The Machine Shop Supervisor is responsible for leading all day-to-day machine shop operations, including CNC programming, production scheduling, workflow management, employee supervision, quality standards, and continuous improvement initiatives. This role requires advanced Mastercam programming expertise, strong CNC machining knowledge, and proven leadership skills to ensure safe, efficient, and on-time production while maintaining the highest quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

• Lead, mentor, and supervise machinists, CNC programmers, setup technicians, and machine operators.
• Provide technical support and guidance for machine setups, programming challenges, and production troubleshooting.
• Foster a culture of safety, accountability, quality, and continuous improvement.
• Ensure compliance with all company policies, safety regulations, and PPE requirements.
• Conduct employee training, performance coaching, and skills development programs.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work environment utilizing 5S principles.

CNC Programming & Technical Leadership

• Serve as the primary technical expert for all Mastercam programming activities.
• Create, optimize, and maintain CNC programs to maximize productivity, quality, and machine utilization.
• Select appropriate tooling, machining strategies, feeds, and speeds to achieve optimal performance.
• Review engineering drawings, CAD models, and specifications to ensure programming accuracy.
• Troubleshoot complex machining, tooling, and programming issues.
• Collaborate with Engineering and Design teams to improve manufacturability and machining processes.

Production Planning & Scheduling

• Develop and manage daily, weekly, and long-term production schedules to meet customer delivery requirements.
• Coordinate workflow between programming, setup, machining, inspection, and shipping departments.
• Prioritize production based on delivery commitments, material availability, machine capacity, and staffing resources.
• Monitor production progress and make real-time adjustments to maintain schedule adherence and efficiency.

Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement

• Analyze production flow and identify bottlenecks affecting throughput and delivery performance.
• Drive process improvements focused on setup reduction, cycle-time optimization, machine utilization, and labor efficiency.
• Implement Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Ensure efficient allocation of equipment, tooling, and personnel resources.
• Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), including productivity, scrap rates, quality metrics, and on-time delivery performance.

Equipment & Maintenance Management

• Oversee preventive maintenance schedules for all machine shop equipment.
• Monitor machine condition, coolant systems, lubrication levels, and tooling performance.
• Coordinate equipment repairs and maintenance activities to minimize downtime.
• Evaluate and recommend tooling, equipment, and technology investments to improve productivity and operational performance.

Cross-Functional Support

• Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, Purchasing, and Management teams to support business objectives.
• Assist with machining estimates, process planning, and quoting activities when required.
• Support new product introductions and manufacturing process development.

Qualifications

Required Experience

• 7+ years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
• 3+ years of leadership or supervisory experience within a machine shop.
• Advanced Mastercam programming experience.
• Strong knowledge of CNC mills, lathes, tooling, fixtures, and machining processes.
• Experience reading and interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, and CAD models.
• Proven ability to troubleshoot machining and production issues.

Preferred Qualifications

• Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.
• Experience with ERP/MRP systems and production scheduling software.
• Knowledge of quoting, estimating, and capacity planning.
• Technical degree or apprenticeship in Machining, Manufacturing Technology, or related field.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
• Frequent standing, walking, and interaction with machinery.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Work Environment

• Industrial machine shop setting.
• Exposure to noise, moving mechanical equipment, metalworking fluids, and manufacturing processes.
• Compliance with all safety procedures and PPE requirements is mandatory.
