Summary/Purpose:
The Machinist is responsible for producing high-quality parts and tooling by operating a variety of machines, including lathes, mills, and surface grinders. This role involves working closely with Engineering and Operations teams to support repairs and new product development.
Essential Duties and Accountabilities:
Machine Operation & Setup: Set up and operate machine tools such as engine lathes, milling machines, saws, grinders, and various other tools and fixtures.
Production & Repair: Plan and perform machining operations to produce special, experimental, and repair parts. Execute a wide variety of repairs and assemblies that may require fastening, welding, soldering, or basic design work.
Precision Measurement: Proficiently use precision measuring devices including CMM, optical comparators, and hand-held micrometers to ensure accuracy.
Technical Optimization: Select proper feeds and speeds based on material type, finish requirements, and efficient machine utilization.
Precision Standards: Maintain tight tolerances for turning, milling, drilling, and sharpening to .001" or less on location and size.
Advanced Equipment: Operate various CNC logic equipment; the ability to program is strongly preferred.
Finishing Skills: Demonstrate basic skills in grinding, lapping, and honing.
Maintenance & Safety: Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on equipment and use TMS (Maintenance Management Software).
Safety Compliance: Responsible for general shop safety, including strict adherence to Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and maintaining a clean work area.
Advanced Blueprint Reading: Understanding of tolerancing, detailed views, and drafting techniques to assist Engineering with design improvements.
Mathematical Proficiency: Strong math skills including decimals and the ability to convert between English and Metric systems.
Problem Solving: Excellent troubleshooting skills and a thorough understanding of grinding principles and gauging techniques.
Physical Requirements: This position requires the ability to handle moderate to heavy physical requirements consistent with a machine shop environment.
Tool Usage: Expert use of hand tools, including wrenches, screwdrivers, and ratchets, as well as various power tools.
Education and Experience:
Required: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Preferred: 2-year college degree or Certificate in Machining.
Experience: Minimum of 1 year of experience in manufacturing processes, specifically in milling, drilling, turning, and grinding.
Technical Bonus: Experience with CMM and CNC programming is highly preferred.
