Toro’s Irrigation and Lighting business is located in Riverside, CA. The Toro Company’s irrigation business is comprised of two distinct brands, Toro® and Irritrol®. Both brands offer a full line of solid, dependable, irrigation products including controllers, sensors, valves, spray heads and rotors to help customers care for golf courses, sports fields, public green spaces, commercial and residential properties. Unique Lighting Systems is a leading brand of professional grade lighting fixtures, low voltage transformers, LED lamps and the patented HUB system for installation. Serving both residential and commercial markets, Unique Lighting Systems offers a full line of outdoor lighting products.  

 

The Machinist III serves as a senior-level machinist responsible for planning, setting up, and operating advanced manual and CNC machine tools to produce complex, high-precision parts, fixtures, and tooling. Leads the fabrication and modification of parts used to manufacture, repair, and improve machine tools and production equipment. Partners closely with engineering in the design, development, and testing of new and existing products by designing and building sophisticated assembly fixtures, gauges, molds, and specialized tooling to meet company specifications and performance targets. 

 

Wage: $32.54 - $37.48 per hour (based on experience) 

 

1st Shift: Monday - Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm, with overtime when needed. 

  

What Will You Do?  

In order to grow and build a successful career with The Toro Company, you will be responsible for:  

  • Plan, set up, and operate complex multi-axis CNC and conventional machine tools to machine tight-tolerance parts from drawings, 3D models, or verbal concepts, selecting appropriate tooling, speeds, and feeds. 

  • Lead the design, fabrication, and modification of complex fixtures, gauges, molds, and tooling to support new product development, prototype builds, and production improvements. 

  • Interpret highly detailed engineering drawings and 3D models, including advanced GD&T, and provide feedback on manufacturability and design improvements. 

  • Diagnose and resolve machining problems, including tooling selection, work-holding, dimensional variation, and surface finish issues; recommend and implement corrective actions. 

  • Perform advanced in-process and final inspections; collaborate with Quality and Engineering to address nonconformances and implement robust solutions. 

  • Serve as a technical mentor to Machinist and Machinist II employees by providing on-the-job training, guidance on best practices, and input on standard work. 

  • Collaborate with engineering on process development, prototype builds, and design reviews, contributing innovative machining and fabrication approaches. 

  • Support preventive and predictive maintenance activities for critical machine tools and shop equipment; provide input on capital equipment needs and improvements.

What Do You Need?  

To be considered for this role, an individual should meet the following minimal requirements:  

 

Education: 

  • High school diploma or GED required. 

Experience: 

  • Typically 5+ years of progressively responsible experience in CNC and precision machining, including advanced set-ups and programming or program editing. 

  • Demonstrated experience machining complex parts, developing fixtures/tooling, and supporting engineering or prototype work. 

Training / Technical Knowledge: 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of machine shop safety and operations. 

  • Expert-level proficiency with machine shop tools (multi-axis CNCs, lathes, mills, grinders, etc.). 

  • Strong ability to read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, specifications, and GD&T. 

  • Deep understanding of machining processes, cutting tool technology, materials, and standard shop practices.  

Computer Skills: 

  • Strong ability to use a personal computer and associated software. 
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) tools; experience with CAM/software for CNC programming highly desirable. 

Language Skills: 

  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information to engineering, management, and other shop personnel. 

  • Comfortable leading or contributing to design reviews, troubleshooting discussions, and cross-functional meetings. 

Mathematical Skills: 

  • Advanced use of geometry and trigonometry in layout, setup, and complex machining operations. 

  • Ability to perform detailed calculations related to dimensions, tolerances, fits, and tooling offsets. 

Reasoning Ability: 

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to define complex machining challenges, analyze data, and develop effective solutions. 

  • Ability to interpret and apply a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical, graphical, and written form. 

Certificates / Licenses: 

  • Powered industrial truck operator certification required or ability to obtain. 

  • Additional certifications in CNC programming, tooling, or related disciplines preferred. 

Other Skills and Abilities: 

  • Demonstrated mastery in the use of electronic, hand, and power tools; pneumatic tools; mechanical equipment; and metal fabrication equipment. 

  • Ability to develop and document best practices and standard work for machining operations. 

  • Proven ability to lead by example in safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
