Job Title: Machinist

Reports To: Lead Machinist

Position Summary

Perform a basic to advanced level skilled work to accomplish sheet metal repairs and replacements of structural parts. Fabricate replacement covering, panels, or fairings by using the removed parts as samples. Reads and complies with instructions and safety information as necessary for proper and safe completion of assigned work.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review samples, drawings or instructions to understand specifications of output
  • Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping
  • Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job
  • Select appropriate machines (e.g. lathes) and position or load material for a job
  • Monitor machine while working to adjust the feed, maintain temperature and identify issues
  • Determine and program size of batches and speed of machine
  • Monitor output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and repair minor damages
  • Reads instructions and safety information as necessary for proper and safe completion of assigned work.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Profile - Required - Desired - Level

Academic Qualifications - High School Diploma or GED required; Vocational school or apprenticeship preferred

Languages - Read, speak, write, and understand the English language.

Special Licenses - Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certificate is preferred; Airframe Familiarization (FAM) course certificates preferred

Previous Experience - Minimum 18 months of relevant experience providing knowledge of narrow and wide body airframe techniques, terminology, parts, etc.

Technical Skills - Individual will perform daily transactions within Flightstar's ERP system, vending (POU), as well as research customer's maintenance manuals.

CNC machining experience VF2 3 axis machine.

Required Skills - Lifts and carries hand tools, parts, and work materials; ascends and descends ladders and platforms; and frequently works in a variety of positions such as stooping, kneeling or squatting.

Excellent manual dexterity, accuracy and attention to detail

Great verbal and written communication skills

Experience in using and/or programming manual, semi-automated or automated tools and machines (lathes, grinders etc.)

Ability to use precision tools (e.g. calipers) to take accurate measurements

Ability to read blueprints, schematics and manuals

Knowledge of metal properties and other material

Outstanding mathematical skills and analytical abilities

Physical stamina and strength to lift heavy items

Flightstar has been in business as the Fixed Base Operator at Champaign-Urbana’s Willard Airport (KCMI) since December of 1978 and is the only Fixed Base Operator to have ever operated at this airport. 

Airline Services

The Flightstar Airline Maintenance Division has been performing line and overnight maintenance for the air carriers serving Champaign (CMI) for well over 20 years. This maintenance division currently operates on a 24/7 365 basis from a dedicated 33,000 sq/ft. hangar facility.

Our team is proud to have completed over 800 Rolls-Royce AE 3007 engine changes and counting. A majority of these events happen in a singular overnight shift, allowing the aircraft to return to serve the following morning.

Along with routine maintenance events, we have a dedicated detailing team that keeps the aircraft interiors looking clean and bright. From quick wipe downs, polishes, and vacuuming to full blown deep cleaning that includes cockpits, carpet, seat cover change outs, and lavatory soaks.
