Description

Basic Function

Under moderate supervision, sets up and operates machines and precision hand tools to cut, shape, and finish ferrous & non-ferrous metals, plastics and other exotic materials for the manufacture, remanufacture, assembly, installation, and repair of vehicle and equipment parts and components.

Examples of Duties

  • Sets up and operates machine and precision hand tools to fit, manufacture, or repair vehicle parts or mechanisms or other related vehicle components, such as transmissions, pumps, differentials, compressors, blowers
  • Disassembles, repairs, and reassembles components and equipment to ensure adherence to precision alignment and close tolerance requirements
  • Operates lathe for turning, shaping, and finishing shafts, axles, pins, pulleys, and gear for forming flat end surfaces, collars, shoulders, and cylindrical surfaces; cutting screw threads; and drilling, reaming, tapping, and bruling a variety of work pieces
  • Operates milling machines to produce, flat, curved, and irregular surfaces for slots, grooves, keyways, dovetails, spines, flutes, cams, and gears
  • Cleans parts, before and after machining, to remove grease, rust stains, and other foreign matters
  • Works from blueprints, sketches, engineering drawings, damaged parts, or description of parts to be replaced to determine dimensions and tolerances of parts to be manufactured, sequence of operations, and tools, materials, and machines required
  • Verifies dimensions of finished products, using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators, to ensure adherence to specifications
  • Utilizes Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software to operate Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines
  • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out

Minimum Qualifications

  • Four years journey-level experience performing machinist work in the following areas: manufacture, assembly, installation, and repair of vehicle and equipment parts, special tooling, jigs, and fixtures; operation of vertical mill, horizontoal mill and lathe; drilling, milling, turning and grinding ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics and other exotic materials for manufacturing and remanufacturing; and operation of a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mill and lathe OR
  • Completion of a 4 year machinist apprenticeship program from a recognized union which includes training in all of the abovementioned areas
  • Valid California Class C drivers license

  • Theories, principles, and practices in the machining of metals for the repair or production of various vehicle and equipment parts
  • Properties of various types of metals as they relate to manufacturing and repair activities
  • Operations of various precision hand and machine tools, including Computer Numerical Control (CNC) lathes and mills, bridge port mills, manual lathes, sharpeners, and radial drills

Abilities

  • Operate a variety of precision hand and machine tools to cut, shape, and finish metals and products used for the manufacture, assembly, installation, and repair of vehicle and equipment parts
  • Use micrometers and precision measuring instruments
  • Utilize (CAD/CAM) software
  • Read, understand, and apply blueprints, diagrams and specifications
  • Assess and resolve technical equipment problems and breakdowns
  • Safely operate Metro vehicles
  • Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools

  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Travel to offsite locations within a reasonable timeframe
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English

Special Conditions

  • Must possess required standard tools of specified trade
  • Must wear required safety equipment whenever on duty
  • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
  • Positions in this classification are considered safety sensitive under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations
  • Working hours are from 0530 - 1400
