    Job Description:

    The Instrument Design and Fabrication Core Facility is an ASU Knowledge Enterprise Core Facility. The Instrument shop is an ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D certified facility and is seeking to fill a Machinist position. Under shop management direction, you will contribute to the optimal, efficient, and safe operation of multiple shop equipment.

    This position requires hands on work in a prototype environment working from concept designs to machine component(s) and assemblies. Machining and inspection of components are a major part of this position’s responsibilities. This position supports all ASU professors and research scientists along with peer institution specialized projects

    Essential Duties:

    • Fabrication of mechanical instrument prototype components and assemblies utilizing a wide variety of machine shop equipment and materials such as metal alloys and plastics along with machinable ceramics.

    • Manufacture needed fixtures and holding jigs for instrument fabrication.

    • Inspect assigned work to verify accuracy within tolerances and requested specifications.

    • Maintain required level of laboratory safety training to perform routine duties.

    • Must be able to read and interpret hand drawn sketches, CAD generated part drawing prints and understand quality assurance/control (QA/QC) equipment and procedures.

    • Perform routine maintenance and in-house repairs of toolroom machinery and support equipment.

    • Set-up, program and operate 2-1/2 & 3-axis CNC machining centers along with second operation supporting toolroom machine tools.

    • Set-up, program and operate CNC lathes.

    • Work full-time hours from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Four years of recent machinist experience in a machine shop environment; OR, Completion of a two-year machinist program and 3 years machinist experience. Demonstrated knowledge in the development and design process of 3D CAD model parts, drawings and assemblies.

    • General knowledge of the properties of materials.

    • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties and use office equipment including a desktop computer.

    • Experience with G-Code and onboard Haas programming.

    • Worked with SolidWorks, SolidCam or FeatureCAM application software.

    • Good understanding of ANSI and GD&T dimensioning and tolerancing standards. Knowledge of the proper and safe operation of CNC and manual; CNC milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, and other standard toolroom equipment.

    • Knowledgeable in all standard machine shop safety practices. Skilled with the use of machine shop and industrial reference material. (i.e. Machinery’s Handbook, MatWeb.)

    Working Environment:

    • Regular activities require ability to manage multiple tasks at one time, to be able to prioritize tasks; to manage conflict: to interact in a team environment: and to communicate effectively to exchange accurate information.

    • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting and laboratory subject to extended periods of being in a stationary position, operating computer and other office productivity machinery; required to move a moderate distance to perform work. Working on site will require safety precautions and/or specific processes to be followed along with required PPE (e.g. gloves, hearing protection, safety glasses, etc.).

    • Frequently moves up to 25 pounds for various needs.

    • Regular use of standard machine shop equipment including, but not limited to, CNC and manual milling machines, large machining centers, CNC and manual lathes, grinders and hand tools which produce metal chips and shavings.

    As a core part of our research support team, our machinists provide prototype manufacturing by operating CNC mills and lathes, wire EDM, reading blueprints, and building precise custom parts.
