Job Summary
Join the DSAMH Encampment Outreach Team serving Sussex County. This role involves approximately 80% field outreach and 20% office work, providing compassionate support to individuals experiencing homelessness and behavioral health challenges.
You will build trusting relationships with individuals living in encampments, tent communities, wooded areas, under bridges, and other unhoused settings while helping connect them with recovery, mental health, and community resources.
ResponsibilitiesConduct outreach to individuals experiencing homelessness.
Build rapport and provide peer-based emotional support.
Encourage and assist individuals in accessing mental health and substance use treatment.
Share lived recovery experience to inspire hope and support recovery.
Assist with referrals and coordination of community services.
Transport clients to appointments and treatment services when needed.
Provide direct and indirect peer support to clients and families.
Respond appropriately during emergencies, including assisting with Narcan administration and/or CPR when necessary.
Complete documentation and maintain accurate records.
Use Microsoft Word and Excel for daily documentation and communication.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Valid driver's license with the ability to travel throughout Sussex County.
Personal lived experience with mental illness and/or substance use recovery.
Willingness to self-disclose lived experience for education, peer support, and recovery role-modeling.
Peer Support Certification or willingness to obtain certification within six months of hire.
Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Passion for helping individuals in recovery and underserved communities.
Previous experience in peer support, behavioral health, case management, outreach, or human services.
Knowledge of community resources and recovery services.
CPR and Narcan training is a plus.
