Job Description:
This role is for a senior Mainframe Engineer who will act as the client-side technical SME for the enterprise mainframe platform. The position is responsible for governance, operational oversight, change coordination, compliance assurance, and sustainability upgrades across z/OS and related subsystems. The ideal candidate will bring strong hands-on mainframe infrastructure engineering experience, vendor coordination expertise, and deep knowledge of security, risk, and audit processes in a regulated enterprise environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the technical lead for the Mainframe Platform, including z/OS, Dell Storage, IMS, DB2, RACF, and CA JobTrac.
  • Govern daily operations, production stability, platform changes, maintenance, and sustainability upgrade projects.
  • Act as the interface between internal teams and the managed service supplier for issue resolution, escalation, and change coordination.
  • Provide governance and oversight on contractual SLAs, service performance, and key operational metrics.
  • Perform technical review, validation, coordination, and compliance assurance for vendor-managed and business-requested infrastructure changes.
  • Execute risk management controls, baseline security compliance activities, and audit support across z/OS, IMS, DB2, zSecure, and RACF-related subsystems.
  • Serve as the client-side subject matter expert to ensure the managed service provider delivers contracted services and approved changes effectively.
  • Support major incident response, including unscheduled engagement for critical issue resolution and planned after-hours releases.
  • Perform root cause analysis and define corrective and preventive actions for recurring system or service issues.
  • Identify technical risks related to system upgrades and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Review completed enhancements and upgrades and recommend opportunities for process and platform improvement.
  • Communicate technical issues, risks, and recommendations clearly to engineering teams, vendors, and leadership.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in mainframe infrastructure engineering.
  • Strong knowledge of z/OS architecture and z/OS internals.
  • Hands-on experience with IMS, DB2, RACF, and enterprise mainframe operations.
  • Knowledge of mainframe security, RACF administration, and related compliance controls.
  • Experience supporting audits, findings remediation, baseline security compliance, and key management activities.
  • Working knowledge of IBM mainframe technologies such as JCL, CICS, SQL, z/OS, DB2, IMS, VSAM, XML, and TSO/ISPF.
  • Ability to coordinate infrastructure changes across internal teams and managed service providers.
  • Strong troubleshooting, incident management, and root cause analysis skills.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of the zSecure tool and Carla scripting/customization.
  • Experience with regulated environments requiring strong governance, risk, and audit controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively identify risks and execute creative yet controlled solutions.
  • Flexibility to support after-hours releases and urgent production incidents.
