Introduction

Prince William County's Department of Public Works, Solid Waste Division, is seeking a skilled and reliable Maintenance & Operations Specialist to join our team at the County's Municipal Sanitary Landfill in Manassas, Virginia. This position is responsible for performing a wide range of maintenance, repair, and operational tasks related to facility infrastructure and landfill environmental control systems. About This Role:

The Maintenance & Operations Specialist performs skilled hands-on maintenance and repair work at the County's solid waste facilities. Work is performed primarily outdoors and involves the use of hand and power tools, operation of small construction and maintenance equipment, and routine inspection of environmental control systems and facility infrastructure. The position requires sound judgment, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to understand and follow regulatory requirements, technical manuals, and construction drawings. The role also requires practical knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems, general building maintenance, and the use of work order management software. This position works under the supervision of the Assistant Maintenance & Operations Superintendent.

Responsibilities in this role may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Facility and Equipment Maintenance - Maintain and repair facility infrastructure, including buildings, service areas, vehicle scales, utilities, roads, and fencing. Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair landfill environmental control systems associated with stormwater management, groundwater monitoring, leachate collection and pumping, landfill gas control, and SCADA systems. Safely operate hand tools, power tools, and small equipment. Assist with coordinating and scheduling preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Contractor and Project Support - Assist in obtaining quotes and coordinating contractor activities for small repair or maintenance projects. Monitor contractors' work to ensure compliance with County standards and safety requirements.
  • Environmental Compliance and Recordkeeping - Prepare and maintain operational and regulatory documentation and reports. Use formal work order management software to track and document work completed. Utilize computers and software applications, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Customer Service and Teamwork - Work collaboratively with County staff, vendors, businesses, and the general public. Respond to questions and requests in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Safety and Process Improvement - Follow all safety procedures and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency, safety, and environmental compliance.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent full-time experience performing skilled maintenance and repair of facilities and facility infrastructure.

Preferences:

  • High school diploma or higher level of education is preferred.
  • Minimum three (3) years of full-time experience performing skilled maintenance and repair of facilities and complex facility infrastructure, including mechanical and electrical systems, is preferred.
  • Experience maintaining landfill environmental control systems is preferred.
  • Experience operating small construction or maintenance equipment such as a backhoe, skid steer, or forklift is preferred.
  • Experience using work order management software is preferred.
  • Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, is preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Driving Requirement - Having and maintaining a valid Virginia driver's license is a requirement of the position. This job also requires driving a County vehicle.
  • Essential Service Requirement - This position is designated as an essential employee. Responding to emergencies, inclement weather, and other issues that may impact facility operations before or after regular working hours, including on holidays and weekends, is required.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - This job is a safety-sensitive position that requires wearing personal protective equipment, including but not limited to safety shoes, safety vest, and hard hat.
  • Physical Requirement - This job is considered very heavy work and requires exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, over 50 pounds of force frequently, and over 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. The work is generally performed in both inside and outside environments and may be exposed to vibrations, intense noises, moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, inadequate lighting, and poor ventilation. The ability to safely work in inclement weather and around vehicular traffic and heavy equipment is required. The job also requires the ability to routinely walk long distances over rough terrain in noisy and dusty conditions, as well as climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, and grasping.
  • Pre-employment Requirement - Successfully passing a pre-employment physical examination is a condition of employment for this position.

Work Schedule:

This position offers steady, year-round work and is eligible for overtime, weekend pay, and holiday pay. The typical work schedule for this position is 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday. Working some weekends and holidays may be required. Shift days and hours are subject to change based on business needs. Working outside of regularly scheduled hours with little or no notice may be required in the event of inclement weather or a department or County emergency.

Starting Salary Range:

$36.35 to $48.40 hourly
