Maintenance Assistant

Common duties for a maintenance assistant include:

• Responding to maintenance requests such as leaky faucets, broken locks or minor electrical issues

• Performing routine inspections of doors, windows, lighting and plumbing to identify wear or potential hazards

• Completing basic repairs, including plumbing issues, replacing damaged tiles or adjusting door hinges

• Assisting with minor upgrades like painting walls, mounting shelves or installing whiteboards

• Organizing and maintaining tools, equipment and supply rooms to ensure quick access and clean work areas

• Supporting other maintenance or janitorial staff with larger repairs or seasonal tasks

• Following safety procedures when handling tools, ladders or cleaning chemicals

• Documenting completed tasks and reporting recurring issues to supervisors

Skills and Qualifications:

• Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, heating and cooling building systems

• Familiarity with maintenance tools and equipment, such as voltage testers, plungers, drain snakes, wrenches, drills, saws, screwdrivers, hammers, levels, paint rollers and utility knives

• Basic arithmetic skills to take measurements and calculate material requirements for projects

• Organizational skills to maintain tidy maintenance and storage areas and track service requests

• Observation skills to conduct routine inspections and diagnose maintenance issues when making repairs

• Time management skills to complete all assigned service requests and additional tasks during a shift

• Ability to move heavy objects from one place to another and access difficult-to-reach places, such as ceilings and crawlspaces
