About Us
Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students, in a unique residential setting. Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students, GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program.
Description of Work
This position is located at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind and involves highly skilled work in the general maintenance, repair, and/or construction of buildings, related equipment, and plumbing, heating/cooling, and electrical systems across campus facilities. Work is performed in accordance with maintenance schedules and operational priorities supporting the educational and residential environment of the school. Special repair assignments are typically received through work orders from authorized personnel.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Work requires the exercise of initiative and judgment in applying various technical trade skills to a wide range of maintenance, repair, and construction issues affecting campus facilities. Because the school includes academic buildings, residential facilities, dining areas, and administrative spaces, strong knowledge of plumbing systems and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems is critical to maintaining safe, comfortable, and functional environments for students, staff, and visitors. Responsibilities may include diagnosing system failures, performing preventative maintenance, repairing piping systems, fixtures, boilers, and HVAC equipment, and ensuring systems operate efficiently and in compliance with applicable codes and standards.
Employees in this class determine the extent of repair or replacement work required and ensure building systems remain safe and operational. Work may involve supervision of employees performing journeyman-level work in electrical, plumbing, masonry, heating and air, carpentry, cabinet making, roofing, painting, or other skilled trades. However, employees may also independently perform a wide variety of highly technical tasks at and above the journeyman level to maintain and support the school's facilities and infrastructure.
