  • The two (2) current vacancies are in the Facilities and Utilities Maintenance Sections of the Public Works Department.*

This recruitment may be used to establish an eligible list for future Maintenance Worker III vacancies.

The Maintenance Worker III serves as lead worker over a crew within their assigned area of responsibility to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance and repair of public facilities. This is the advanced journey level class in the maintenance worker class series. The Maintenance Worker Ill is distinguished from other classes in the maintenance series by the responsibility assumed by leading a crew and by the performance of the more complex and responsible duties assigned to positions in this series. Incumbents at this level typically possess specialized skills, knowledge and abilities, and work independently.

Facilities Maintenance:

The ideal candidate is a skilled and dependable professional with experience in public works facilities. They demonstrate strong leadership as a crew lead, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and to standard. They bring hands-on expertise in tasks such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and equipment operation, along with the ability to read blueprints and maintain systems in compliance with health and safety codes. They are proficient in maintaining pools, pumps, filters, and related infrastructure.

Utility Section:

The ideal candidate is a skilled and experienced maintenance worker that is comfortable repairing and maintaining water distribution and/or storm/sewer collection systems assets and equipment. They are good at motivating and directing crews and are comfortable interacting with a variety of people including the general public, businesses, and contractors. They are familiar with utility maintenance best practices and related regulations that protect public health and the environment.

They take pride in public service and contribute to the safety, function, and appearance of community facilities and infrastructure. Known for their reliability, teamwork, and ability to train and guide staff, the ideal candidate will excel in both fieldwork and administrative tasks such as recordkeeping and coordinating daily operations.

In addition to the benefits as outlined in the Benefits tab of this job announcement, this position will be scheduled to work 4, 10-hour days per week, which can allow for a generous work/life balance.

This posting is written notice of a permanent, vacant position in the Utilities Section. Internal applications will be reviewed after Friday, July 17, 2026, which is 10 working days after the recruitment is posted. Examples of Duties

The current two (2) vacancies are in the Facilities Maintenance and Utility Maintenance Sections.

Duties in the Facilities Maintenance Section may include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as lead worker over an assigned crew;
  • Provide guidance and training to less experienced personnel;
  • Assist assigned supervisor with daily supervision of personnel and the timely completion of assigned duties;
  • Check work of assigned crew;
  • Maintain timesheets and other records as appropriate;
  • Ensure that safety measures and practices are utilized at all times;
  • Performs a variety of duties at the skilled level to maintain and repair city buildings, structures and their attendant equipment;
  • Duties include carpentry, painting, lock-smith, plumbing, electrical control systems, HVAC systems, read blue prints, build and assemble furnishings;
  • Balance and maintain proper water chemistry;
  • Monitor/adjust filtration equipment;
  • Calibrate chemical probes;
  • Maintain/repair filters, pumps, motors, lines, tanks;
  • Maintain and ensure all aspects of the Civic Center pond and Sports Center pool operations;
  • Meet state and federal health code standards;
  • Provide training and assist the Facilities Supervisor or Public Works Manager in assigning and coordination of work;
  • Requisition of supplies and inspection of work performed by staff and contractors;
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Duties in the Utility Maintenance Section may include but are not limited to:

  • Repair water and sewer line breaks;
  • Dig ditches to lay and/or expose water and sewage lines;
  • Cut and replace damaged pipes;
  • Perform minor plumbing and electrical repairs;
  • Clean and remove blockages from sewage and storm drain lines;
  • Operate, exercise, repair, or replace water valves;
  • Install, repair, or replace fire hydrants, water meters, backflow devices, water main and service lines;
  • Flush water distribution system;
  • Collect water samples for analytical purposes;
  • Respond to water quality complaints;
  • Maintain records of system performance, maintenance, and repairs;
  • Respond to after hour calls;
  • Disinfect water mains and service lines after pressure reductions;
  • Install meter boxes
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of public facilities including the areas of streets, utilities, parks, street landscape maintenance, facilities, and/or recreation, comparable to that of the Maintenance Worker Il in the City of Milpitas.

Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade (e.g. high school diploma or GED)

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES

  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License.

When assigned to Facilities:

  • Possession of and ability to maintain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) within 11 months of appointment.

When assigned to the Utilities Section:

Water Utility Section:

  • Class B Commercial Driver's License with a Tanker endorsement within 11 months of appointment.
  • Possession of, and ability to maintain, a State of California Water Distribution Operator Certificate Grade II from State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB)
  • Obtain and maintain a State of California Water Distribution Operator Certificate Grade III from SWRCB with 11 months of appointment.
  • Obtain and maintain a State of California Water Treatment Operator I from SWRCB within 11 months of appointment.

Storm/Sewer Section:

  • Possession of, and ability to maintain a Wastewater Collection System Maintenance Certificate, Grade II from the California Water Environment Association (CWEA).

Supplemental Information

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

  • Receives general supervision from assigned Senior Public Works Lead, Maintenance Supervisor or Public Works Division Manager.
  • Exercises indirect supervision over assigned maintenance personnel.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will consist of an evaluation of the applicants training and experience based on the application and responses to the Supplemental Questionnaire. Only the candidates whose backgrounds best match the position will be invited to proceed in the selection process. Additional phases of the selection process will consist of one or more interviews.

Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

Work is mainly performed outdoors; ability to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, squat, kneel, crawl, bend, and stoop at any given time; ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds of weight throughout the day and occasionally up to 90 pounds; exposure to outdoor elements in all weather conditions throughout the year, confined spaces, hazardous waste, sewage, chemicals, herbicides and pesticides; ability to walk on uneven surfaces; ability to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Milpitas.

RETIREMENT

Membership in CalPERS (2% at 60 or 2% at 62 with three year average salary). City of Milpitas employees do not participate in Social Security, but do contribute to Medicare. Additionally, members pay $2.40/per hour to the LIUNA pension fund.

MEDICAL INSURANCE

Choice of CalPERS Medical Plans. City pays coverage up to the Kaiser rate. Employees who waive health coverage are eligible to receive $125 per month in lieu of medical plan coverage with proof of other coverage.

RETIREE MEDICAL

Employees are eligible upon CalPERS retirement from the City to receive up to 100% retiree medical coverage (currently based on the Kaiser health rate), based on years of service.

DENTAL & VISION

City provides full family coverage for Delta Dental and EyeMed or VSP Vision at no cost to the employee.

LIFE INSURANCE

City provides $50,000 term policy. Supplemental employee-paid life insurance is available up to $500,000, based on carrier acceptance.

DISABILITY INSURANCE

City provides a Short-Term Disability plan similar to State Disability Insurance (SDI) coverage. Employees do not participate in SDI. Long-Term Disability coverage of 60% of base salary up to $1,500 per month is available after a 60-day waiting period. Additional buy-up options for LTD are available up to $6,000 per month.

VACATION

Hourly employees earn 11-31 days of vacation per year based on years of service.

HOLIDAYS

Employees receive 12 paid holidays and one (1) floating holiday per year.

SICK LEAVE

Employees earn 12 days annually.

TUITION REIMBURSEMENT

Employees are eligible to receive up to $1,400 per fiscal year in tuition reimbursement.
