Summary
Under direction, the Maintenance Electrician is responsible for the inspection, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of the College's electrical distribution systems, lighting systems, equipment, and related controls. This position ensures campus electrical systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable electrical codes, manufacturer recommendations, and safety regulations.
The Maintenance Electrician supports the College's mission by maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient electrical systems that provide a secure learning and working environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned.
- Receive work assignments, work orders, and preventive maintenance schedules from the Maintenance Supervisor or Lead Maintenance Mechanic.
- Inspect, diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, and install commercial electrical systems, equipment, and components throughout campus facilities.
- Install, repair, and replace electrical panels, transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, disconnects, conduit, wiring, receptacles, switches, lighting fixtures, motors, controls, and associated electrical equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance on electrical distribution systems and equipment to maximize reliability and service life.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical power distribution systems, branch circuits, motor control circuits, emergency power systems, lighting controls, and related equipment.
- Install and terminate conduit, raceways, conductors, and cable using industry-standard methods and materials.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical control systems associated with HVAC equipment, pumps, generators, elevators, and other building systems as assigned.
- Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and perform routine maintenance on Building Automation System (BAS) electrical components and associated field devices as required.
- Read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, specifications, and technical manuals.
- Test electrical systems using appropriate diagnostic equipment, including multimeters, megohm meters, clamp meters, and circuit analyzers.
- Maintain emergency lighting, exit lighting, transfer switches, backup power systems, and other life safety electrical equipment.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service reports, equipment documentation, and preventive maintenance records using the College's computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Coordinate electrical work with contractors, vendors, and other Facilities personnel as needed.
- Maintain compliance with OSHA, NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code), NFPA 70E, applicable state and local electrical codes, and College safety policies.
- Participate in the department's on-call rotation and respond to electrical emergencies outside normal working hours.
- Maintain assigned tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
- Perform other departmental duties as assigned; may provide technical guidance and training to maintenance personnel assigned to assist with electrical-related projects.
Education/Experience
Requirements:
- Associate's degree in Electrical Technology, Industrial Electrical Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field, - OR - an equivalent combination of technical education, industry certifications, and documented training.
- Successful completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship program.
- Minimum of five (5) years of current journey-level commercial or industrial electrical experience performing installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial electrical systems.
- Experience working in institutional, educational, healthcare, or commercial facilities is preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS
Required:
- Valid Illinois Electrician License or documented completion of a recognized electrical apprenticeship program and current municipal or local electrical license as required by the Authority Having Jurisdiction.
- Valid driver's license with the ability to qualify as insurable under the College's insurance carrier.
Preferred:
- NFPA 70E Electrical Safety Training.
- OSHA 10-Hour or OSHA 30-Hour Construction or General Industry Certification.
- Building Automation System (BAS) training or certification (such as Johnson Controls Metasys or comparable system).
- Generator, fire alarm, or medium-voltage electrical systems training.
Qualifications
In addition to the above education/experience requirements, the following are sought:
- Thorough knowledge of commercial electrical distribution systems, motor controls, lighting systems, emergency power systems, and electrical equipment.
- Working knowledge of Building Automation Systems, electrical controls, and low-voltage control circuits.
- Thorough understanding of the National Electrical Code (NEC), NFPA 70E electrical safety requirements, and applicable state and local codes.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, specifications, and technical manuals.
- Proficiency using electrical diagnostic instruments, testing equipment, and hand and power tools.
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, contractors, vendors, and other College personnel.
- Commitment to workplace safety, customer service, and continuous improvement.

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb ladders and stairs, work from lifts and scaffolding, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, bend, and work in confined spaces. The employee frequently works overhead and may be required to lift, carry, push, or pull equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision sufficient to distinguish electrical wiring, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those encountered while performing the essential functions of this position.
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and may involve exposure to energized electrical equipment, mechanical systems, moving machinery, heights, dust, noise, confined spaces, and other conditions commonly associated with commercial electrical maintenance. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including arc-flash protection as required, must be used in accordance with College safety policies and NFPA 70E requirements.
Participation in an on-call rotation and occasional evening or weekend work is required to respond to emergencies and support campus operations.
