We are seeking an experienced Maintenance Facility Planner / Architect to join our Architecture and Buildings Group in Baltimore, Maryland. This position offers an opportunity to lead the planning and design of complex maintenance, operations, fleet, transit, aviation, public works, and transportation support facilities while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams of architects, engineers, and planners.
Responsibilities:
The Maintenance Facility Planner / Architect will lead facility assessments, programming, master planning, conceptual design, and architectural development for maintenance and operations facilities. The successful candidate will work directly with clients to evaluate existing operations, define facility requirements, and develop responsive, efficient, and sustainable solutions that support long-term operational goals.
This role requires a strong understanding of facility planning principles, maintenance workflows, fleet and equipment operations, space programming, and the integration of architectural and engineering systems within complex operational environments.
Responsibilities:
- Lead planning and architectural design efforts for maintenance and operations facilities, including:
- Transit maintenance facilities
- Fleet maintenance garages
- Public works facilities
- Transportation operations centers
- Aviation support facilities
- Equipment maintenance and storage facilities
- Municipal and institutional maintenance facilities
- Conduct facility assessments, operational analyses, and stakeholder interviews.
- Develop facility programs, space requirements, adjacency studies, and operational workflow analyses.
- Prepare feasibility studies, facility master plans, and conceptual design alternatives.
- Lead workshops and planning sessions with clients, operations staff, and stakeholders.
- Develop planning reports, facility planning documents, presentations, and recommendations.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary project teams including structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, environmental, and transportation engineers.
- Support architectural design development from schematic design through construction documentation phases.
- Evaluate facility capacity, operational efficiency, equipment needs, and future growth requirements.
- Integrate sustainability, resiliency, and life-cycle considerations into facility planning solutions.
- Assist with project management activities including scope development, budgeting, scheduling, and resource coordination.
- Participate in business development activities, proposal preparation, client presentations, and project interviews.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from an accredited program.
- Registered Architect (RA) in the United States or ability to obtain reciprocity.
- 11-15 years of experience in facility planning, architecture, or related design disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience planning and designing maintenance, operations, fleet, transportation, aviation, public works, or industrial facilities.
- Strong understanding of facility programming, operational workflow analysis, and master planning.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams and managing client relationships.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Proficiency with architectural design and planning software including Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to travel periodically for client meetings, site visits, and project workshops.
- US Citizenship required
Preferred:
- Experience with transit agencies, departments of transportation, aviation authorities, public works agencies, or federal clients.
- Experience leading facility planning studies and master planning initiatives.
- LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) or similar sustainability credential.
- Experience with facility condition assessments and asset management planning.
- Familiarity with BIM workflows and facility lifecycle planning.

The expected compensation range for this position is $100,000.00 - $150,000.00, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience. In addition, this position may be eligible for a range of benefits (e.g., Medical, Dental & Vision, Health Savings Accounts, Health Care & Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, Disability Benefits, Life Insurance, Voluntary Benefits, Paid Absences and Retirement Benefits, etc.).
