Summary
The Maintenance Helper supports the Maintenance Manager with the daily upkeep, cleanliness, appearance, and basic repair needs of the company's buildings, grounds, vehicles, and equipment. This is a hands-on position for someone who is dependable, willing to work, and comfortable performing a wide variety of tasks. Work may include mowing grass, picking up trash, painting, cleaning vehicles, plunging toilets, moving materials, assisting with basic repairs, and assisting the Maintenance Manager complete larger projects.
The person in this position is not expected to be a licensed tradesperson, but should be mechanically inclined, able to use common hand and power tools, and willing to learn.
Primary Responsibilities
- Assist the Maintenance Manager with maintenance, repair, renovation, and property-improvement projects.
- Perform basic facility repairs, including unclogging toilets and drains, replacing fixtures, patching walls, painting, caulking, and completing minor carpentry work.
- Mow, edge, trim, water, and maintain grass, landscaping, parking areas, and other exterior areas.
- Inspect the property for landscaping, cleanup, safety, or maintenance needs.
- Pick up trash, scrap material, rocks, and debris throughout the property.
- Empty trash containers in manufacturing areas, offices, and other locations.
- Sweep, blow off, clean, and maintain sidewalks, steps, entrances, and concrete areas.
- Clean, wash, and vacuum company and administrative vehicles.
- Clean and hose down utility vehicles and other company equipment.
- Check scrap wood trailers and other waste containers and haul materials to the dump when needed.
- Use a tractor or other equipment to consolidate dumpster contents and coordinate pickups as directed.
- Fill propane cylinders and maintain propane inventory in accordance with company safety procedures.
- Assist with moving equipment, furniture, supplies, tools, and materials.
- Help set up or clean up after construction, maintenance, company events, or special projects.
- Turn in required inventory, stock, inspection, and maintenance documentation on time.
- Keep maintenance tools, work areas, vehicles, and storage areas clean and organized.
- Report damaged equipment, unsafe conditions, leaks, electrical concerns, plumbing problems, and other facility issues to the Maintenance Manager.
- Follow all company safety procedures and wear required personal protective equipment.
- Perform other maintenance and helper duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in maintenance, landscaping, construction, farm/ranch, warehouse work, or a similar hands-on position is preferred but not required.
- Basic knowledge of common hand tools and power tools.
- Ability to follow instructions and complete assigned tasks without constant supervision.
- Willingness to perform both indoor and outdoor work.
- Ability to recognize when a problem should be referred to the Maintenance Manager or a qualified contractor.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to operate or learn to operate tractors, utility vehicles, lawn equipment, trailers, pressure washers, and similar equipment.
- Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors and other employees.
- Must be willing to perform routine, dirty, physical, and sometimes unpleasant tasks as needed.
Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, push, pull, and work with hands.
- Regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds; heavier items may require assistance or mechanical equipment.
- Work outdoors in heat, cold, wind, dust, and other weather conditions.
- Work around manufacturing operations, vehicles, machinery, noise, grease, dirt, and cleaning chemicals.
- Safely use ladders, hand tools, power tools, lawn equipment, and maintenance equipment.
