Maintenance Manager

The New Castle Generating Station, situated on a 270-acre site along the Beaver River, has undergone a significant transformation from a coal plant to a natural gas facility in 2016, breathing new life into its operations and contributing to the region's energy landscape. Equipped with three natural gas-fired steam boilers, the plant boasts a total potential MW output of 328. The plant is notable for its utilization of B&W Boilers and Westinghouse Steam Turbine Generators, controlled by an ABB DCS system.

Opportunity Summary

The Maintenance Manager at Heritage New Castle Generating Station leads maintenance personnel and oversees the safe, reliable maintenance of the station's natural gas-fired boilers, steam turbine generators, and balance-of-plant systems. This role coordinates maintenance activities with operations and contractors while supporting planning, scheduling, employee development, budgeting, and continuous improvement to enhance equipment reliability and plant performance. The position also supports maintenance activities at the Niles Generating Station as needed.

Your scope of responsibility as Maintenance Manager will include the following primary functions:

• Lead and supervise maintenance personnel, ensuring maintenance activities are performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company policies, plant procedures, and technical standards.
• Direct daily maintenance activities supporting the station's boilers, steam turbine generators, auxiliary equipment, and balance-of-plant systems to maximize equipment reliability and plant availability.
• Promote a strong safety and environmental culture by ensuring compliance with plant safety programs, environmental regulations, and applicable federal, state, and company requirements.
• Plan, prioritize, and coordinate preventive, predictive, corrective, and emergency maintenance activities to optimize equipment performance and minimize unplanned outages.
• Develop maintenance work plans, schedules, and resource assignments while coordinating maintenance priorities with operations and other plant departments.
• Coordinate maintenance projects, contractor activities, and outage work to ensure safe, timely, and cost-effective execution.
• Analyze equipment failures, maintenance trends, and performance data to identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and improve equipment reliability.
• Support the development and continuous improvement of maintenance procedures, work methods, and best practices to enhance operational efficiency and equipment performance.
• Coach, mentor, and develop maintenance personnel to strengthen technical skills, leadership capabilities, and overall workforce effectiveness.
• Manage maintenance activities within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), ensuring accurate work orders, equipment histories, and maintenance documentation.
• Support the Management of Change (MOC) process by ensuring maintenance-related changes are properly evaluated, documented, and implemented.
• Monitor maintenance budgets, inventory, spare parts, and procurement activities to support efficient resource utilization and equipment readiness.
• Travel to and support maintenance activities at the Niles Generating Station as needed, assisting with maintenance, outages, troubleshooting, and operational requirements.
• Collaborate with plant leadership, operations, engineering, supply chain, contractors, and regulatory personnel to support maintenance planning, compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Serve as a member of the station leadership team by supporting plant objectives, promoting operational excellence, and driving improvements in maintenance performance, equipment reliability, and workforce engagement.

Working Relationships

The Maintenance Manager reports to the Plant Manager, supervises maintenance personnel, and coordinates with plant leadership, engineering, compliance, and administrative staff to support daily plant operations.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.

Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.

Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

The Maintenance Manager works a standard Monday to Friday day shift schedule, ensuring consistent plant operation and support during regular business hours. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status will also be required.

Some travel may be involved to participate in Manager, Owner, User Group, or other offsite meetings.

Compensation

This position offers an annual base salary ranging from $120,000 to $160,000 and includes eligibility for an annual performance bonus.

Professional Expertise & Qualifications

We are seeking an accomplished leader with extensive experience in the operations and maintenance of power generating facilities, paired with a strong history of career growth and a track record of excellence in achieving results.

• A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering or equivalent is desired, providing a strong foundation for understanding the technical aspects of power plant operations and management. Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of education.
• Demonstrated supervisory experience in power plant maintenance and operations, with a strong background supporting the maintenance of natural gas-fired generating equipment, steam systems, and plant assets.
• Strong technical knowledge of power plant equipment and systems, including natural gas-fired boilers, steam turbines, generators, balance-of-plant equipment, and associated control systems, with the ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and support reliable plant operation.
• Experience supporting preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities, with an understanding of maintenance planning and execution for boiler, steam turbine, and auxiliary plant systems.
• Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to manage work orders, schedule maintenance activities, maintain equipment history, and support asset reliability.
• Proven supervisory and team leadership skills, with the ability to direct maintenance personnel, prioritize work assignments, and promote a productive and accountable work environment.
• Thorough understanding of safety regulations, procedures, and industry standards, with a demonstrated commitment to maintaining a strong safety culture and ensuring safe work practices.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify equipment issues, assist in root cause investigations, and implement effective corrective actions.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with operations personnel, plant management, contractors, and other departments to support the safe and reliable operation of a natural gas-fired steam generating facility.
• Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
