The City of Greensboro is looking for a skilled and dependable Maintenance Mechanic I - Plumbing to join the Building Maintenance Division within the Department of Engineering and Inspections.

This is an opportunity for a plumbing professional who enjoys solving problems, working with their hands, and taking pride in quality workmanship. You will perform plumbing and mechanical repairs, renovations, installations, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance throughout City facilities.

About the Role

As a Maintenance Mechanic I - Plumbing, you will perform plumbing and mechanical maintenance and repairs with minimal to no supervision.

Your work will include:

Plumbing Installation & Repair

  • Install new plumbing systems from the ground up.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and service plumbing and sewage systems throughout City facilities.
  • Thread and solder pipe.
  • Troubleshoot existing plumbing equipment and systems.
  • Operate plumbing hand and power tools, including:
  • Drills
  • Saws
  • Sewer machines
  • Electric meters
  • Pipe-threading machines
  • Gas torches
  • Wire and stick welders

Mechanical & Technical Systems

  • Use electric meters and understand electrical control systems.
  • Operate and maintain solar hot water systems.
  • Perform mechanical troubleshooting and repairs associated with plumbing systems.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair roll-up doors.
  • Maintain fire sprinkler systems.
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair automated book drop systems in City Library facilities.

Safety, Codes & Teamwork

  • Follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) policies and procedures.
  • Follow applicable local, state, and national plumbing codes.
  • Train and work alongside plumber technicians.
  • Make independent decisions while maintaining safe and effective work practices.

Physical Requirements

This is a hands-on skilled-trades position. The successful candidate must be able to perform physical activities that may include:

  • Bending
  • Stooping
  • Standing

  • Kneeling
  • Climbing ladders
  • Pushing and pulling
  • Reaching
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED or higher with 1-3 years of related plumbing experience, which must be clearly indicated on the application.
  • "OR" No High School Diploma/GED with 5-7 years of related plumbing experience, which must be clearly indicated on the application.
  • Valid drivers license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Plumbing Contractors License.
  • Experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and/or repairing roll-up doors.
  • Experience with computer software, iPads, and/or general office equipment.
  • Experience in other maintenance trades or skilled-trades fields (Electrical, HVAC, Carpentry), which must be clearly indicated on the application.
