The Maintenance Mechanic II performs skilled maintenance work involving painting, pest management, and door hardware and lock repair. The position plans and completes painting projects, conducts preventive and corrective maintenance, maintains the inventory of supplies and equipment, performs campus and life-safety inspections, and assists other maintenance departments as operational needs require. The employee works independently while ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards and departmental procedures.

Duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Plan, schedule, and coordinate interior and exterior painting projects.
  • Inspect campus buildings and grounds for signs of insect and pest activity.
  • Apply approved pesticides and pest control treatments in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Monitor pest activity and document treatment results.
  • Install, adjust, repair and replace door hardware, including hinges, closers, panic devices, locks, cylinders, and handles.
  • Assist with campus life safety inspections and report the findings to maintenance supervision.
  • Perform routine campus inspections to identify maintenance needs, safety hazards, and facility deficiencies and report the findings to maintenance supervision.
  • Assist other maintenance departments with repairs, special projects, emergencies, and preventative maintenance as needed.
  • Maintain inventories of tools, equipment, paint, hardware, chemicals, and maintenance supplies.
  • Order materials and recommend inventory replenishment.
  • Complete work orders accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain maintenance records and inspection documentation.
  • Follow OSHA, state, and agency safety regulations.
  • Operate state vehicles and maintenance equipment safely.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance situations during and after normal working hours when required.
  • Support campus events by assisting with facility setup and breakdown as assigned.
  • Maintain clean and organized work areas, storage rooms, and maintenance vehicles.

Some travel, including some occasional overnight stays are required

The selected candidate is subject to a background investigation.

The North Carolina Justice Academy (with campuses in Edneyville, NC and Salemburg, NC) provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for law enforcement officers on topics including anti-terrorism, community-oriented policing, criminal investigation, traffic crash investigation, firearms, self-defense, and management and supervision. Additionally, the Academy provides basic, intermediate, and advanced training for Detention Officers and Telecommunicators on behalf of the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Knowledge of painting methods and surface preparation.

  • Knowledge of integrated pest management practices.

  • Knowledge of commercial door hardware, locks, and related repair techniques.

Minimum Education and Experience

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualification: May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
