Seattle Central College is looking to hire a Maintenance Mechanic - Lead Carpenter in our Facilities department.
Salary Range for this position is $55,512.00 to $72,816.00 annually.
Opportunity is open until filled, first review of materials will begin October 7th, 2026.
Position Summary
Bring your craftsmanship to a role where your work makes a visible difference every day. As a Maintenance Mechanic 2 with a carpentry focus, you will help create and maintain safe, functional, accessible, and welcoming spaces for Seattle Central College students, employees, and visitors.
Working with a high degree of independence, you will serve as a primary carpentry resource for the campus, completing projects involving framing, doors, windows, walls, ceilings, cabinetry, millwork, flooring, signage, and other building components. You will also apply your broader maintenance skills to building repairs, remodeling, preventive maintenance, and related trade work. This is an opportunity to take ownership of meaningful projects, solve varied facilities challenges, and share your technical expertise with colleagues as part of a collaborative Facilities team.
This position is full-time non-permanent, not to exceed 18 months and with the possibility to transition into regular/permanent status, working 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, primarily from 6am to 2:30pm.
This position works 100% of the time on-site
This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by WFSE.

What you will be working on:
Perform journey-level carpentry work to construct, remodel, maintain, and repair campus buildings, facilities, and interior and exterior spaces.
Construct, install, modify, and repair building components, including framing, doors, windows, walls, ceilings, cabinetry, casework, millwork, trim, fixtures, signage, and related finishes.
Install and repair flooring and surface materials, including resilient flooring, carpet, wood, tile, masonry, and cementitious products.
Read and interpret blueprints, plans, specifications, sketches, diagrams, and work orders to determine project requirements, materials, methods, and work sequencing.
Evaluate maintenance and project needs, recommend solutions, and estimate the labor, materials, equipment, and time needed to complete assigned work.
Safely operate and maintain tools and equipment, including hand tools, portable and stationary power tools, woodworking machinery, ladders, lifts, and other facilities-maintenance equipment.
Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on building components, fixtures, equipment, and facility systems.
Perform skilled and semi-skilled work in related trades, which may include glazing, flooring, painting, plumbing, electrical, welding, metal fabrication, masonry, and general mechanical maintenance.
Coordinate assigned carpentry projects and provide technical guidance to employees assisting with the work, including communicating methods, sequencing tasks, promoting safe practices, and reviewing completed work for quality.
Collaborate with Facilities staff, contractors, and campus departments to complete work safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to College programs and operations.

What you bring as a candidate: (Any Equivalent Combination of Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education and Experience)
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Four or more years of experience in building maintenance, construction, repair, or a skilled mechanical trade, including substantial professional carpentry experience; or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in carpentry or another closely related skilled trade.
Demonstrated ability to perform journey-level carpentry work independently.
Demonstrated knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the carpentry trade.
Demonstrated knowledge of lumber, engineered wood products, sheet materials, fasteners, hardware, flooring, finishes, and other construction materials.
Demonstrated ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction plans, specifications, sketches, diagrams, and technical instructions.
Demonstrated ability to inspect work, identify repair needs, determine appropriate methods, and estimate the labor, materials, equipment, and time required to complete assignments.
Demonstrated ability to safely and effectively use, adjust, and maintain hand tools, power tools, woodworking machinery, and other facilities-maintenance equipment.
Demonstrated ability to perform skilled or semi-skilled work in related building-maintenance trades.
Demonstrated knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices associated with construction, carpentry, powered equipment, and facilities maintenance.
Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate assigned projects, provide clear technical guidance, and review work for quality and compliance.
Demonstrated ability to use computerized work-order systems, email, and standard workplace technology.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and provide responsive service to students, employees, contractors, and members of the public.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, use sound judgment, and collaborate effectively as part of a facilities team.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, identities, abilities, and life experiences.
Demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities and perform evening, weekend, or emergency work when operationally required.
