Maintenance Mechanic - Water & Sewer Department

Hourly Rate: $27.28-$28.00 DOQ

The City of O'Fallon is seeking a skilled and dedicated Maintenance Mechanic to support operations within our Water and Sewer Department. This essential role performs advanced technical work to maintain, repair, and overhaul hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and SCADA systems across the City's Water Treatment Plant, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Water Wells, and Sewer Pump Stations.

This position supports 24/7 operations and plays a vital role in ensuring safe, reliable, and regulatory-compliant utility services for our community.

Major Duties

  • Maintain, repair, overhaul, install, and inspect hydraulic, mechanical, electrical, and SCADA systems.
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance on water and sewer facilities.
  • Diagnose equipment deficiencies and perform advanced electrical/electromechanical troubleshooting, including work on 220V and 480V systems.
  • Analyze faults and maintain motor control panels and electrical control equipment.
  • Operate hand and machine tools to precise tolerances.
  • Utilize specialized test equipment such as megohmmeters, volt-ohm meters, pneumatic and electronic control devices.
  • Maintain and install pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic, and computer-based controls; lubricate and inspect equipment.
  • Service instrumentation sensors, transducers, PLCs, control wiring, and VFDs.
  • Perform welding, cutting, and process piping repairs.
  • Assist with grounds and building maintenance, SCADA monitoring, and equipment operation including skid steers, loaders, cranes, vacuum/jet trucks, and backhoes.
  • Address customer concerns, assist with purchasing, maintain facilities, perform data entry and daily readings.
  • Provide functional supervision when needed and assist other City crews.
  • Support asset management activities and respond to emergency situations.
  • Assist with snow removal and perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills Required

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical equipment maintenance and pumping systems.
  • Experience with pneumatic, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic control systems, including calibration and analysis.
  • Familiarity with SCADA repair and interpretation of wiring diagrams/blueprints.
  • Knowledge of safety practices related to 220V and 480V electrical equipment.
  • Understanding of water and wastewater system maintenance.
  • Skill in using specialized equipment, hand tools, power tools, computers, and mobile devices.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to work on-call evenings/weekends and in all weather conditions.
  • One to two years of relevant experience or equivalent apprenticeship/internship.
  • Ability to obtain a Missouri Class A CDL with tanker endorsement.
  • Ability to obtain required Missouri DNR certifications in Drinking Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Treatment, and MWEA Collection Systems.
  • Employees must pursue the highest level of eligible DNR certifications.
