CITY OF NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND CAREER OPPORTUNITY Position Title MAINTENANCE PERSON Posting Date Tuesday July 28 2026 Closing Date Friday August 14 2026 Department Public Services - Various Divisions Brief Job Description essential functions of the job Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe front end loader dum p truck and similar equipment used in the completion of public wo rks projects. Assists in estimating the amount and cost of materials required for each project. Uses a variety of hand and power tools to dig ditches and trenc hes patch roadways and perform public wor ks related tasks around gas pip es trees wires cars personal property and fellow workers. Performs a wide range of trade work including welding masonry carpentry electrical concrete work etc. Performs skilled manual work involving the maintenance of vario us municipal facilities equipment and grounds. Attends training sessions as req uired to maintain abreast of up dates or changes in occupational safety requirements. Required to respond to emergency situations such as snow storms . Maintains department equipment s uch as table saws drill presse s etc. Minimum Entrance Qualifications Position requires an Associates Degree or Journeyman level kno wledge of construction trade work and three to five 3-5 years of exp erience in the operation of heavy equipment or any equivalent combination of education training and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abili ties to perform the job. Ability to safely & effectively operate heavy equipment and mac hinery. Must possess working knowledge of all working trades pertaining to routine carpentry masonry plumbing and construction work knowledge of local building and safety codes working knowledge of construction site preparation. Ability to read and interpret bl ue prints andor construction p roject plans ability to follow oral & w ritten instructions in a detai led timely efficient & safe manner perfo rm work under extreme weather conditions for long periods of t ime & ability to interact effec tively with co-workers & to complete work in a timely and safe manner. Ability to recognize unsafe working conditions to ensure that appropriate safety precautions a re taken to ensure employee saf ety & ability to work independently wi th minimum direct supervision.
