    Job Description:

    Position Title: NIGHT CUSTODIAN

    QUALIFICATIONS: A) Demonstrate the ability to work independently to complete all assigned tasks in a consistently high manner.

    B) Demonstrate the ability to work as an effective team member, to identify potential problems, and to address them in a timely and efficient manner when practical.

    C) Demonstrate the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

    D) Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the Head Custodian, Supervisor of Facility Operations, building administrators, and all Bethel Public School stakeholders.

    E) Demonstrate the ability to understand the importance of a safe and clean environment to the educational process and to take pride in a job well done.

    F) Possess experience in the custodial field that the Administration and Board of Education find appropriate and acceptable.

    EDUCATION:

    High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED). Knowledge of basic mechanical utility systems, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting. Previous custodial experience preferred.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; push/pull equipment; use arm, leg, and back muscles for extended periods; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects and tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb, stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk or hear; and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 15 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must successfully complete a pre-employment physical.

    REPORTS TO:

    Supervisor of Facility Operations (overall supervision)

    The School Principal (daily supervision)

    Under the general direction of a head custodian, Supervisor of Facilities, or school administration, performs custodial work in the cleaning and general upkeep of a school. The nature of this work addresses the cleanliness and sanitation of the facility in which the incumbent is assigned. He or she does related work as required.

    • Maintains the cleanliness and sanitation of the building by performing all work assignments in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
    • Provides for the daily cleaning of restrooms and locker rooms.
    • Vacuums carpets.
    • Empties trash.
    • Polices the building for litter, including the external perimeter.
    • Performs necessary work to maintain the cleanliness and appearance of all hard surfaces.
    • Operates all equipment necessary to perform work assignments in a safe manner.
    • Investigates, documents, and reports all unusual occurrences to the supervisor.
    • Maintains all custodial equipment.
    • Supports and carries out Board of Education policies and regulations.
    • Performs minor maintenance repairs, including but not limited to fixing plumbing leaks attributed to leaking faucets, loose drain connections, or faulty flushometers, and replacing burned-out light bulbs, repairing minor wallboard damage, and painting.
    • Maintains specific safety precautions, including: no small or sharp objects or tools that may injure students, staff, or visitors will be left out; cleaning carts will not be left unattended; custodial closets will remain locked at all times; hallways and pathways will be kept clear of debris, cleaning equipment, and tools.
    • Operates Board of Education utility truck as needed.
    • Performs snow removal and sanding/salting as necessary.
    • Monitors the schools environmental systems, including fire alarms, boilers, and HVAC.
    • Performs all necessary tasks to open and close facilities according to procedures as appropriate.
    • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Facility Operations and Board of Education Administration.
