Description

The Department of Public Utilities - Floodwall Utility Division is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the position of Maintenance Specialist - Floodwall. The incumbent performs floodwall maintenance to include gate inspections, pump station operations, grass cutting along the entire floodwall along with vegetation spraying.

Duties include but are not limited to

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operating specialized mowing equipment
  • Operating and maintenance of sluice gate, flap gates, closures and levees
  • Utilizing MainSaver maintenance computerized program
  • Performing mandatory Floodwall inspections required by the Army Corps of Engineers
  • Performing inspections and maintenance on gate and closures throughout the floodwall system to ensure all gates and closures are ready for a flooding on the James River
  • Ensure the operation of pumping stations is ready for emergency operation
  • Control vegetation through cutting with specialized mowing equipment on slopes known as levees
  • Spraying vegetation with commercial spraying equipment on uneven, rocky terrain and various locations
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Equipment inspection and maintenance
  • Completing work orders as assigned

This position is considered an Essential Personnel, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather.

This individual may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays or on-call, as needed.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • One year of college preferred
  • Three years of experience directly related to assignment
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Some assignments may require a valid Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Drivers License within 30 days of hire
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Grounds maintenance experience, such as mowing large fields and operating slope mowers
  • Mechanical maintenance experience
  • Welding experience is a plus
  • Experience applying pesticides is a plus
  • Some experience with mowing equipment, power tools and basic hand tools
  • Ability to obtain a Registered Technicians Certification within 2 years of hire

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Considerable general knowledge of various trades associated with building/plant maintenance and grounds maintenance; specific knowledge of one or multiple trades such as painting, carpentry, masonry, welding, traffic control systems, or locksmith experience. Knowledge of small engine operations and repairs; related safety and OSHA requirements; and basic math and arithmetic.

Skills (some combination of the following):

Demonstrated skills operating power tools; communicating with various internal and external departments, vendors, citizens, and the general public; driving City vehicles to and from assigned locations; reading blueprints; and good driving skills. Skilled in processing the appropriate forms; using equipment such as a two-way radio, general hand tools, air compressor, automobile jump start box, etc. Oral and written communication skills and strong customer service skills.

Abilities (some combination of the following):

Demonstrated ability to analyze information; exhibit dependability; problem solving and to manage time effectively.

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently climb, balance, stoop, kneel, finger, feel, and hear; and occasionally crouch, crawl, and talk. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
