Job Description

The Maintenance Technician plays a key role in a high-volume manufacturing facility that produces quality food products. In this position, you set up and maintain production machinery, troubleshoot and repair equipment issues, and perform preventive maintenance to keep operations running safely, efficiently, and in compliance with industry standards.

Responsibilities

• Provide emergency, unscheduled troubleshooting and repairs of production equipment during the manufacturing process to minimize downtime.
• Perform scheduled maintenance and repairs on production and facility equipment according to established plans and procedures.
• Prepare and set up machinery for scheduled production runs, ensuring correct configuration and readiness for operation.
• Repair and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment used throughout the facility.
• Perform mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and carpentry troubleshooting and repair on packaging and production line machines.
• Read and interpret equipment manuals, technical documentation, and work orders to carry out required maintenance and service tasks.
• Create and modify preventive maintenance procedures to improve equipment reliability and reduce unplanned outages.
• Coordinate and expedite repair operations with production supervisors to align maintenance activities with production needs.
• Ensure equipment operates at proper speeds and settings to meet throughput standards and product quality requirements.
• Manage daily work orders and complete all required maintenance documentation and paperwork in a timely and accurate manner.
• Perform cleaning operations using detergent baths, degreasing methods, grit blasting, wire brushing, and other appropriate techniques.
• Use power hand tools daily in a safe and responsible manner, following all safety guidelines.
• Conduct equipment inspections and correct any process or safety deviations discovered during checks.
• Write and share reports as needed, including Daily Communication Reports, to communicate events and activities that occurred during the shift.
• Follow OSHA, AIB, and SQF standards, and recommend and implement improvements needed to maintain compliance with these standards.
• Adhere to Company Handbook standards and rules at all times while on site.
• Report unsafe conditions and work-related accidents immediately to appropriate leadership or safety personnel.
• Evaluate workplace hazards and verify measures and procedures required to maintain a safe work environment.
• Ensure daily adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP), and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) regulations.
• Work effectively in a fast-paced environment and support continuous improvement in safety, quality, and productivity.
• Train and support other team members by sharing technical knowledge and best practices when needed.
• Perform other related maintenance and facility support duties as assigned.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma, GED, or technical school education.
• At least five years of related experience in an industrial manufacturing environment in a maintenance position, preferably within an automated food processing plant.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to read work documents in English.
• Strong mathematical skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
• Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
• Strong reasoning ability, including applying common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, and dealing with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively train others.
• Strong focus on safety and adherence to safety procedures.
• Good understanding of plant quality requirements and food safety standards.
• Good working knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
• Reliable attendance and solid work history.
• Strong team orientation and ability to work closely with others.
• Hands-on skills in electrical maintenance and repair.
• Hands-on skills in mechanical maintenance and repair.
• Experience with preventive maintenance in an industrial setting.
• Ability to read and work from blueprints and schematics.
• Experience with hydraulics, pneumatics, and related systems.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting production equipment, including PLC troubleshooting.
• Ability to perform fabrication tasks and TIG welding as needed.
• Experience with machine operation in a manufacturing environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Technical school coursework or certifications in industrial maintenance, electrical, mechanical, or related fields are beneficial.
• Experience in a food processing plant environment is preferred.
• Familiarity with AIB, SQF, HACCP, and other food industry standards is an advantage.
• Comfort working with heavy machinery and complex automated systems.
• Ability to work irregular schedules and overtime when required.
• Experience working in a team of maintenance technicians within a large facility.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to perform exacting work under time pressures.

Work Environment

The role is based in a food processing plant that operates heavy machinery and automated production lines, with approximately 250 employees and a maintenance team of about 18 technicians. Work involves daily and frequent exposure to dirt, dust, fumes, odors, noise, vibration, and occasional poor lighting, as well as seasonal exposure to extreme temperatures, wetness, and humidity. The environment includes physical risks and hazards such as working around mechanical equipment and forklifts, chemical and electrical hazards, and potential fire or explosive risks, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols. The position is physically demanding and requires standing, walking throughout office, warehouse, and plant areas, lifting and carrying packages up to 50 pounds, and frequent reaching, kneeling, crawling, and twisting. Clear vision, hearing, and professional communication with colleagues are essential. Personal protective equipment such as bump caps, safety glasses or goggles, gloves, ear plugs, lockout devices, fall protection, and other PPE is provided and must be worn as required. The work involves frequent time pressures, changing tasks, multitasking, and detailed, exacting work, often in a noisy and distracting environment, while working closely with others as part of a team and occasionally responding to emergency situations. Dress and conduct must align with GMP requirements and safety standards appropriate for a food manufacturing facility.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Dallas, TX.

The pay range for this position is $34.00 - $36.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
