OverviewThe City of Roanoke is seeking an experienced, self‑motivated individual to perform skilled mechanical work on heavy and light power‑driven equipment as a Maintenance Technician IV. The successful candidate will serve as an expert resource in guiding and instructing the work of subordinate mechanics and service workers while diagnosing, adjusting, repairing, and servicing the full range of power‑driven equipment used by the City, including diesel or gasoline engine equipment, air compressors, pump apparatus, and aerial truck hydraulic systems.Key EligibilityHigh school diploma or GED.One to three years of related experience and/or training in repairing heavy power‑driven equipment (diesel and gasoline).Valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.State Inspection license & ClassB CDL preferred, or obtain a ClassB CDL within 12 months of employment.Must attain three ASE certifications within 2 years of employment.Availability for on‑call duty after regular work hours on a standby basis.ResponsibilitiesAssign and supervise maintenance workers and technicians.Discuss job requirements with and receive detailed instruction from supervisor.Inspect work in progress to assure conformance with instructions.Requisition necessary equipment and materials.Maintain time and material records and prepare simple reports.Perform or assist in performing more difficult or skilled tasks.Inspects playgrounds and associated equipment (if assigned).Perform minor repairs of buildings, doors, windows, floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items.Make repairs and renovations to fields and grounds, including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.Coordinate with other department operational and technical personnel in the performance of assigned tasks.Diagnose, adjust, repair, and service the full range of power‑driven equipment used by the City.Coordinate with and advise the public on daily or emergency functions.Perform trades work in multiple assigned areas at a Master level such as motor equipment repair, welding, carpentry, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.Operate heavy and light equipment in snow removal.Assist with special events, snow removal, and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends as needed.Enforce sound safety and housekeeping practices; follow safety rules and procedures to avoid hazards.May be required to wear respiratory protection during duties.Supervisory ResponsibilitiesSupervise a work crew in maintenance and construction operations within the assigned department, carrying out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the City's policies and applicable laws.QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED.Three to five years of experience and/or training in the trade area assigned or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Strong reading and interpretation skills for safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.Effective oral and written communication skills.Common sense reasoning ability to carry out instructions and solve problems involving concrete variables.Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsAppropriate class A, B, or C commercial driver's license (depending on assignment).Master‑level licensure in an area of skilled trades (if required).Registered technician license and Certified Fertilizer Applicator certification (if required).State Inspector certification (if required).Physical DemandsRegularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
