Maintenance Technician – Hospital Linen Operations

Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and improving the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and production equipment used within a hospital linen processing facility. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe, reliable, and uninterrupted laundry operations while maintaining equipment in compliance with company standards, manufacturer recommendations, and applicable safety requirements.

The Maintenance Technician works closely with Production, Operations, Management, and other departments to identify equipment issues, complete preventative maintenance, respond to breakdowns, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Equipment Maintenance & Repairs

● Perform routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs on industrial laundry equipment.

● Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, plumbing, and conveyor-related issues.

● Maintain and repair washers, dryers, ironers, folders, garment finishing equipment, conveyors, presses, steam systems, pumps, compressors, and other production equipment.

● Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns to minimize production interruptions and downtime.

● Diagnose equipment problems and determine appropriate repair procedures.

● Replace worn, damaged, or defective parts and components.

● Perform equipment adjustments, alignments, lubrication, and calibration as required.

● Assist with installation, relocation, modification, and startup of new equipment.

Preventative Maintenance

● Follow and maintain a scheduled preventative maintenance program.

● Complete daily, weekly, monthly, and annual maintenance tasks as assigned.

● Document completed preventative maintenance and identify equipment requiring additional attention.

● Monitor equipment condition and proactively address potential failures before they result in production downtime.

● Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and repair documentation.

● Maintain an appropriate inventory of commonly used tools, parts, and supplies.

Safety & Compliance

● Follow all company safety policies and procedures.

● Properly use personal protective equipment (PPE).

● Follow lockout/tagout procedures when servicing equipment.

● Maintain a clean and safe work area.

● Immediately report unsafe equipment, hazardous conditions, or safety concerns to management.

● Support compliance with applicable OSHA requirements and facility safety standards.

● Ensure repairs are completed safely before equipment is returned to production.

Production Support

● Work closely with Production Supervisors and Operations Management to prioritize equipment repairs based on operational needs.

● Communicate equipment status, expected repair times, and potential production impacts.

● Support production during equipment-related issues and provide technical assistance when appropriate.

● Help identify recurring equipment failures and recommend solutions to prevent repeat problems.

● Assist management with evaluating equipment performance and replacement needs.

Facility Maintenance

● Perform general facility maintenance as assigned, including basic plumbing, electrical, lighting, doors, drains, fixtures, and building-related repairs.

● Assist with maintaining utility systems supporting laundry operations.

● Inspect areas for leaks, unusual noises, excessive vibration, overheating, or other signs of equipment or facility problems.

● Coordinate with outside contractors and service providers when specialized repairs are required.

Performance Expectations

The Maintenance Technician is expected to:

● Maintain equipment in safe and reliable operating condition.

● Respond quickly and professionally to equipment breakdowns.

● Reduce avoidable production downtime.

● Complete preventative maintenance according to established schedules.

● Accurately document maintenance activities and repairs.

● Identify recurring problems and recommend permanent solutions.

● Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance area.

● Communicate effectively with Operations and Production leadership.

● Demonstrate urgency when critical production equipment is down.

● Protect company equipment, tools, inventory, and resources.

Maintenance performance may be evaluated using:

Qualifications

Required

● High school diploma or GED.

● Previous maintenance, mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, commercial laundry, or related experience.

● Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical equipment.

● Ability to safely use hand and power tools.

● Ability to read and follow equipment manuals, maintenance instructions, and safety procedures.

● Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple maintenance needs.

Preferred

● Experience with industrial laundry equipment.

● Experience in a hospital linen, commercial laundry, manufacturing, or industrial production environment.

● Electrical, HVAC, plumbing, welding, mechanical, or industrial maintenance experience.

● Experience with preventative maintenance programs.

● Familiarity with PLCs, sensors, motors, pumps, conveyors, steam systems, and pneumatic equipment.

Physical Requirements

The Maintenance Technician must be able to:

● Stand and walk for extended periods.

● Bend, kneel, climb, reach, and work in confined or difficult-to-access areas.

● Lift and carry tools, parts, and equipment as required.

● Work around heat, steam, noise, water, chemicals, machinery, and moving equipment.

● Safely work from ladders or elevated work areas when necessary.

● Perform emergency repairs in an active industrial laundry environment.

Work Environment

This position works primarily within a commercial hospital linen processing facility. The environment may include industrial machinery, high temperatures, steam, water, noise, moving conveyors, laundry chemicals, and heavy equipment.

The Maintenance Technician must be willing to work scheduled hours, weekends, holidays, overtime, or emergency call-in hours when operational needs require maintenance coverage.

Reporting Structure

Reports To: Chief Engineer

Works Closely With: Fellow Maintenance Technicians, Production Supervisors, Production Employees, Operations Management, Office Management, Vendors, Contractors, and Equipment Service Technicians.

Overall Objective

The primary objective of the Maintenance Technician is to keep the hospital linen operation running safely, efficiently, and consistently by preventing equipment failures, responding quickly to breakdowns, and maintaining production equipment at the highest practical level of reliability.
