MAINTENANCE WORKER I

Duties and Features of the Class Performs basic maintenance repair and construction work on County property and equipment. An employee in this class works under general supervision. Emergency call-in work may be required.

Examples of Work Performs all types of maintenance on buildings, grounds, roads, and equipment; raises flags; collects, delivers mail; collects, recycles, and trashes; mows grass; shovels snow; clears brush; replaces light bulbs; repairs pot holes; moves furniture; paints and performs carpentry work; makes minor mechanical and equipment repairs; uses a variety of hand tools; operates snow plows, tractors, and fork lift; performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of basic tools, their application, maintenance, and repair.
  • Knowledge of basic tasks and repairs in mechanical trade fields.
  • Ability to understand and comply with written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to apply principles, practices, methods, tools, and equipment used by skilled tradesmen/mechanics in helping them carry out their tasks.
  • Ability to operate equipment and power tools.
  • Ability to communicate well and establish and maintain a rapport with others.
  • Knowledge of industrial hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to work well with general supervision.

Qualifications Minimum high school or GED with experience in the maintenance, carpentry, and mechanical/plumbing fields or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Basic computer skills preferred.

MAINTENANCE WORKER II

DUTIES AND FEATURES OF THE CLASS Performs work on County property and equipment throughout the various locations in Environmental Services. An employee in this class works under general supervision. Emergency call-in work may be required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK Performs maintenance work on buildings, grounds, landscaping, roads, and equipment to include painting, minor carpentry, and plumbing tasks on all Environmental Services buildings or in the field; raises flags; collects, delivers mail; collects, recycles, and trashes; assembles, maintains, and moves equipment, furniture; repairs windows, doors, and lights; uses a variety of hand tools; operates snow plows, tractors, and fork lift; removes snow and ice from sidewalks and other areas; performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of maintenance requirements for public buildings, grounds, and municipal types of equipment.
  • Knowledge of industrial hazards and safety precautions.
  • Thorough knowledge of tools used in routine maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment, and grounds.
  • Ability to apply principles, practices, methods, tools, and equipment used by skilled tradesmen/mechanics in helping them carry out their tasks.
  • Ability to operate County vehicles and other general motorized equipment used to maintain County assets.
  • Ability to move up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions.
  • Ability to use and climb ladders.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, department heads, representatives from other agencies, and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum High School diploma or GED with at least 2 - 3 years of experience in the maintenance, carpentry, and mechanical/plumbing fields or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, solid customer service and organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and basic computer knowledge.

MAINTENANCE WORKER III

DUTIES AND FEATURES OF THE CLASS Performs work on County property and equipment throughout the various locations in Environmental Services. An employee in this class works under general supervision. Emergency call-in work may be required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK Performs maintenance work on buildings, grounds, roads, and equipment; paints and performs carpentry work; makes repairs and modifications to mechanical and transportation equipment; operates tractors, fork lift, and snow removal equipment; assists and/or performs independent mechanical, plumbing, carpentry tasks on buildings or in the field; may assist with plant operation, sludge application, and farming, loading of Class A sludge; assists or independently performs pump station maintenance; makes recommendations for equipment refurbishment and budgetary needs; may oversee and direct the work of others; may schedule daily work load; performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Thorough knowledge of maintenance requirements for public buildings, grounds, and municipal types of equipment.
  • Knowledge of industrial hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to plan and supervise work of subordinates.
  • Extensive knowledge of tools used in routine maintenance and repair of buildings, equipment, and grounds.
  • Ability to safely operate backhoes, skid steerer, small tractors, and other light equipment used to maintain County assets.
  • Ability to work well with general supervision.
  • Performs responsible and difficult work involving the use of independent judgment and personal initiative.

QUALIFICATIONS Minimum High School Diploma or GED with considerable experience in the maintenance, carpentry, and mechanical/plumbing fields or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of or ability to obtain a pesticide applicator certification within 6 months of hire. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel), and supervisory skills preferred.
