Position Details

The City of Auburns Public Works and Parks Maintenance Divisions are establishing a new eligible list for the position of Maintenance Worker I, which will be used to fill current and future vacancies throughout 2026. The City is currently continuing to work through candidates from the previous eligibility list while also establishing this new list to support ongoing hiring needs.

Note: If you applied during the January/February 2026 recruitment and successfully passed the Mechanical Aptitude Test, you do not need to reapply, as you are already on the current eligibility list. Eligibility lists remain active for up to six months. Applicants who did not pass the Mechanical Aptitude Test within the last six months are not eligible to retest at this time and do not need to reapply until the six-month waiting period has passed.

Salary scale shown is minimum pay rate prior to the 2% CDL premium, and the maximum pay rate including premium pay and highest longevity pay, applicable only after 20 years of service.

The staff hired into this position will be brought in at Step 1 of the 6-step scale, which is $5397.54 month (~$31.14/hour).

This position is represented by Teamsters Local Union No. 117, and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement is effective 1/1/26 - 12/31/28.

Selection Process

Interested individuals should apply online with a complete application that includes job experience, major responsibilities and accomplishments related to this position.

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take an in-person assessment test (Mechanical Aptitude Test, 1.5 hours). Applicants must receive a passing score to be placed on the eligibility list for a screening interview with hiring managers. Applicants with a passing score may be invited to a formal interview and practical testing when there are open vacancies. The eligibility list established for this position is generally good for 6 months.

Testing

Our next round of mechanical aptitude testing will take place on June 2-11, 2026.

Primary Duties

Employees are expected to perform all of the duties of the Maintenance Worker I class as assigned. The list below is not meant to be all inclusive, and the full job description can be viewed here. Staff will have more detailed descriptions for each of the divisions to review when attending the mechanical aptitude test.

Some primary duties include:

  • Operating and/or driving various equipment and machinery including but not limited to: pickups, one-yard loaders or less, tractors and implements, sign truck, pipe pusher, rollers, jackhammers, air compressors, concrete saws, chains saws, all mowers except tractor mowers used to cut rights-of-way, blowers, leaf machines, hand equipment, chippers, small power equipment, generators, sprayers and spreaders, forklifts, and V Box sanders.
  • Being responsible for the operation of dump trucks; paint trucks; and/or a combination of a single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 26,000 pounds, a trailer with a GVWR of more than 10,000 pounds if the gross weight rating of the combined vehicle(s) is more than 26,000 pounds, a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more persons (including the driver), or any size vehicle which carries placarding amounts of hazardous materials.
  • Performing minor mechanical repairs on such equipment.
  • Ordering materials, and interfacing with sales personnel and vendors.
  • Initiating work orders and repair orders and maintaining accurate records of time and materials used in work.
  • Interacting courteously with other employees, utility customers, vendors and the public.
  • Correctly and safely operating all equipment and tools used in assigned division.

Minimum Qualifications

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • A High School Diploma or equivalent; AND
  • One (1) year of full-time, paid related work experience; AND
  • A valid drivers license without impending loss at time of appointment.

For CDL eligible positions: you must obtain a Class "A" CDL and tanker endorsement within one (1) year of employment as a condition of continued employment.

  • If necessary for assigned work, an employee will be required to obtain and maintain a Public Pesticide Operators license, DSHS Water Supply Certification, First Aid Certification, Flagging Certification, Forklift Certification and/or Defensive Driving Certification, or other required certification or license.
