Position Details
The City of Auburns Public Works Division is establishing a new eligible list for the position of Maintenance Worker I - CDL, which will be used to fill current and future vacancies through the end of 2026.
Current vacancies are available in the Water division, and for Mechanics Assistant.
Salary scale shown is minimum pay rate prior to the 2% CDL premium, and the maximum pay rate including premium pay and highest longevity pay, applicable only after 20 years of service.
The staff hired into this position will be brought in at Step 1 of the 6-step scale, which is $5397.54 month (~$31.14/hour).
This position is represented by Teamsters Local Union No. 117, and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement is effective 1/1/26 - 12/31/28.
Selection Process

Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to take an in-person assessment test (Mechanical Aptitude Test, 1.5 hours). Applicants must receive a passing score to be placed on the eligibility list for a screening interview with hiring managers. Applicants with a passing score may be invited to a formal interview and practical testing when there are open vacancies. The eligibility list established for this position is generally good for 6 months.

Employees are expected to perform all of the duties of the Maintenance Worker I - CDL class as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who have:
For CDL eligible positions: you must obtain a Class "A" CDL and tanker endorsement within one (1) year of employment as a condition of continued employment.
If necessary for assigned work, an employee will be required to obtain and maintain a Public Pesticide Operators license, DOH Water Distribution Manager Certification, First Aid Certification, Flagging Certification, Forklift Certification and/or Defensive Driving Certification, or other required certification or license.
Additional Information
Perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions. This may involve physically strenuous, continuous or repetitive movements; skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects; fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism; bending or stooping repeatedly or continually over time; working in small cramped spaces; climbing ladders or steps; walking on rough, uneven ground; and performing other physical tasks as required of the position. Required to sit, talk, and hear; frequently required to use hand tools which require repetitive arm, wrist and hand movement. Occasionally required to stand and reach with arms and hands, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend or crawl. Specific vision abilities include close, distant, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception and to adjust focus. The employee is occasionally required to lift or move up to 50 pounds. Position requires mental acuity to ensure thorough mental analysis of situations in a fast-paced environment. Employee is required to maintain confidentiality of information within the department. The employee may be required to deal with disgruntled individuals requiring the use of conflict management skills. Employee is frequently required to perform work in confidence and under pressure for deadlines, and is required to maintain professional composure and tact, patience and courtesy at all times.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Employee performs work independently under general supervision of division supervisor. Work may be prioritized, assigned and reviewed by Maintenance Worker II employees on a project basis. Performance is reviewed through observation, reports, discussion and periodic formal evaluation.
