General Description

To establish an eligibility list for the Maintenance Worker - Streets and Sewers classification, an open competitive exam will be administered through CPS HR Consulting. This examination will be an Online Remote Proctored exam and will be administered the week of Friday, July 17th - Friday, July 24th. More exam information will be sent to candidates upon receipt of their application.

This is semi-skilled manual work involving the use of hand tools, power tools, and various types of motorized equipment in the repair and maintenance of public works facilities.

Employees are responsible for performing vigorous manual labor under all weather conditions.

Work is normally performed under the supervision of a crew leader or Public Works Maintenance Worker who issues verbal instructions, provides instruction in difficult tasks, and checks work frequently. Incumbents may act as lead worker in a crew. Reports to the Treet Cleaning Crew Leader, Street Cleaning Maintenance Crew Leader, or Utility Cut Repair Crew Leader.

Essential Job Functions

  • Maintains, repairs, clears and cleans streets, alleys, parking lots, and City-owned buildings. Mows, trims, edges and applies pesticides in grass areas on City property in the Right-of-Way

  • Responds to emergency calls or complaints.

  • Operates various types of trucks, tractors, or other vehicular equipment in public works assignments.

  • Uses power tools including, but not limited to, jack hammer, tamper, handroller, power saw.

  • Uses a variety of hand tools.

  • Performs ice and snow control work.

  • Performs traffic control maintenance work; paints traffic markings; assists with repair of signs or signals.

  • Performs related work as required.

Skills/Knowledges/Abilities

  • Ability to perform semi skilled tasks without close supervision.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under all weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to get along well with fellow employees and the public.
  • Skill in the use of various hand tools.
  • Knowledge of vehicular equipment and safety; ability to drive a standard transmission vehicle.

Training/Education/Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six (6) Months experience as a laborer or in construction
  • Ability to obtain or currently possess a Valid Class B, or Higher, Commercial Drivers License (CDL).

Health Insurance

The City offers comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage. The medical plan is a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with a Health Savings Account (HSA) to help cover eligible healthcare expenses. Health insurance coverage begins on your date of hire.

Holidays

For many employee groups, the City provides 17 days (136 hours/year) of paid holiday leave. These include: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Friday after, Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day and New Years Eve.

Life Insurance

After six months of employment, employees are eligible for $10,000 coverage under our group life insurance policy. Additional coverage up to the employees annual salary ($40,000 maximum) may be purchased. Upon retirement this coverage will be reduced to $4,000. The premiums will be paid by the City.

Voluntary Supplemental Benefits

Life insurance (term and whole life), critical illness/cancer, accident, short / long term disability insurance

Deferred Compensation Plan

This plan allows employees to build a financial reserve for retirement by using pre-tax, payroll deducted contributions. This money is held and invested by the plans trustees in options selected by the employee. Risk levels vary depending on the options chosen. Participation is voluntary.

Retirement Plans

The Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS) and the Police and Fire Disability and Pension Fund (PFDPF) are the two plans available to City employees. Both are established by Ohio law and participation is required. Both the employee and the City of Hamilton contribute a percentage (pre-tax) into the system. Members do not pay into the Federal Social Security System. Employees and the City also contribute to Medicare.
