The Maintenance Supervisor is part of the Parks & Outdoor Recreation Division and a member of the regional maintenance team. The position reports to the Regional Maintenance Manager and aids the regional maintenance program for fishing access sites, wildlife management areas, state parks, and administrative facilities. In coordination with the Regional Maintenance Manager, Stewardship Bureau Chief, and regional staff, the position identifies maintenance needs, establishes workflows for regular or routine tasks, and assists in establishing priorities for major maintenance projects. Effective communication and relationship building is an important component of this position to ensure maintenance needs are addressed for all department sites and facilities in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks Region 5 is in south central Montana. The region currently manages five state parks, six wildlife management areas, and 47 fishing access sites. The largest community in the region is Billings, with a growing population exceeding 170,000 in Yellowstone County. Billings is home to two major hospitals, two colleges, and an international airport. The region has fascinating communities representing diverse histories and local personalities examples are Harlowton, Roundup, Big Timber, Columbus, Red Lodge, and Hardin. That historic and modern diversity includes indigenous, ranching, farming, rural, urban, and industrial communities with recreational destinations and opportunities. The social and economic diversity is overlayed on majestic landscapes, Region 5 is home to Granite Peak, the highest peak in Montana, located in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness Area, and the driest desert in Montana located south of the Pryor Mountains. The region has several mountain ranges with unique flora, fauna, and geology blending into diverse prairie ecosystems. The Yellowstone River is a defining feature in the southern portion of the region with its equally well-loved tributaries, the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone, Stillwater, Boulder, and Bighorn rivers. The northern portion of the region is defined by several mountain ranges which cascade from their peaks to the prairie into the Musselshell River basin. The diversity of landscapes and transitions offer a wealth of recreational opportunities for exploring, hiking, camping, floating, sightseeing, fishing, hunting, skiing, birdwatching, picnicking, bike riding, wildlife viewing, ATV riding, snowmobiling, and boating to name a few.

Billings and the surrounding areas have activities such as indoor and outdoor concerts, live theatre venues, archery and shooting ranges, many personal interest organizations, festivals, and art walks; there is something for many interests. The area neighbors Yellowstone National Park and Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area and a variety of local, state, and national attractions including parks with historic significance such as Chief Plenty Coups State Park, Pompey's Pillar, Custer Battlefield, and Pictograph Cave State Park.

Specific Job Information:

The Maintenance Team Supervisor is responsible for conducting, coordinating, overseeing, and inspecting work performed; maintaining, repairing, and constructing buildings and facilities; and maintaining grounds to provide safe and enjoyable recreational opportunities to the public, and managing equipment fleets in a proactive, sustainable manner. Maintenance oversight responsibilities include: habitat maintenance such as fertilizing, farming, tree planting, mowing, managing large scale irrigation systems and waterfowl nesting structures; public drinking water distribution systems; waste water systems; HVAC systems; vault latrine and full service flush toilet and hot water shower facilities; public visitor centers with exhibits including audio visual systems and specialty lighting; building security and fire protection systems; historic sites and structures; landscaped areas with irrigation systems; campgrounds with electrical distribution systems; picnic shelters; boat docks and ramps; solid rail and wire fences; paved and gravel roadways and parking areas; paved and aggregate surfaced trails; boardwalks; directional, information and interpretive signs, kiosks; maintenance shop facilities and other associated infrastructure.

This position frequently requires some office and computer work but most often requires field work under adverse weather and environmental conditions that may include temperature extremes and some weekend, evening, and holiday hours including occasional overtime.

Job Duties:

Directly coordinates, oversees and participates in the maintenance program of state parks, fishing access sites, wildlife management areas, administrative buildings at regional headquarters and all related land, support facilities and utility systems of the region through organizational, administrative, supervisory, and skilled duties as assigned. Assists with hiring and leading regional seasonal and temporary maintenance staff. Monitors employees'' work levels and reviews work performance. Counsels' employees about work-related issues and assists employees to correct job-skill deficiencies.

Works collaboratively to achieve maintenance and operations goals. Oversees the direction and performance of skilled repairs, maintenance, inspections, and stabilization work on site structures, administrative buildings, and all related land, support facilities, and utility systems.

Due to variation in assigned work location or region, specific duties and tasks will vary in type and complexity. Based on directions from the Regional Maintenance Manager, it carries out and provides guidance and directions to staff and contractors conducting various types of maintenance work.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Leading work crews is preferred as this position will actively oversee field-based work of subordinate maintenance and groundskeeper staff and manage budgets relating to maintenance program management as well as individual projects.

  • Ability to safely follow all traffic and state laws and ability to tow trailer with proper towing and safety protocols.

  • Proficient training and leadership skills regarding all safety protocols and standards including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Effective communication and administrative skills, both verbal and written.

  • Working knowledge of methods and practices of general maintenance and construction work related to buildings, facilities and grounds, use and care of tools, and operation of a variety of heavy and light construction equipment

  • Must possess ability to use spreadsheets and other programs necessary to complete maintenance logs and personnel reports.

  • Computer skills (proficient in MS Office especially Excel).

  • Commercial driver's license (ability to obtain) if applicable in certain circumstances.

Minimum Qualifications (Education and Experience):

The knowledge, skills, and abilities of this position are normally attained through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a 2-year degree/training in maintenance, Industrial Arts, Natural Resource Management, Engineering Technology, Mechanics, Land Management, or a related field and/or at least 5 years of general facilities maintenance, construction, repair work, or work in a similar field. Other combinations of education and experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

  • Class 4 AB State of Montana Certification for water and waste-water operators, boiler operator''s license, Basic First Aid/CPR certification, Government Pesticide Applicator''s license may be required on the job and maintained through continuing education and re-certification testing.

  • This position may require a Montana Commercial Driver's License Type 2 Class Band the ability to safely and effectively drive and operate combination vehicles over 26,000 lbs. G.V.W. This license also requires a pre-employment drug and alcohol test and then random drug testing to maintain the CDL.
