General Summary:
Under general supervision the Mammography Technician, performs mammography scans using all precautions for mammography scanning safety. He/she provides radiation protection to patient, staff and self by adhering to prescribed practices and safety standards while producing high quality mammography examinations consistently. The Mammography Technician will ensure to obtain good positioning, appropriate patient demographics and safe effective use of the equipment. The Mammography Technician performs procedures according to the physicians orders and notifies the Radiologist of contradictions to examinations. The individual in this position also interviews the patient and follows patient preparation procedures.
Main Responsibilities:
Perform high quality radiologic and mammography exams on incoming patients through the operation of dedicated and complex mammography equipment in a patient care setting for the purpose of obtaining definitive diagnosis for positive findings on a mammogram
Produce high quality diagnostic images that:
are free from artifacts or blurred images caused by motion
demonstrate the area(s) of interest
exhibit the optimum contrast/exposure needed to differentiate various types of normal and abnormal tissue (e.g., mammary, muscle, fat, lymph)
Monitor patients well-being during exams; recognizing patient discomfort or medical problems and take appropriate action
Guide patients through sometimes difficult process by kindly talking them through the steps and answering their questions and concerns regarding exam procedures and process
Check patients history and prior reports
In providing mammography services, is considerate of cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process of patients served
Conduct patient interviews to attain full understanding of procedure to ultimately obtain consent of the patient
Select correct technical factors relative to the requirements of the study and the patients demographics
Consistently processes radiographic images properly, utilizing automated equipment
Critiques image and make necessary adjustments in technical factors, patient positioning, etc.
Use independent judgment in critiquing radiographs and images to recognize normal and abnormal tissue
Acquire additional required views and/or magnify images based on judgment
Consult with the radiologist or other clinician for purposes of clarifying orders and questionable images/structure
Respond to physician questions and needs regarding patients
May on occasion travel to other outpatient center(s) to help with coverage as needed
Participate in projects and/or meetings, and complete other tasks as assigned by management
Follow established processes/scope of practice
Administers, recognizes emergency situations, initiates code procedures and administers CPR if necessary
Demonstrate knowledge of and consistently use proper sterile technique and/or proper infection control technique
Process images, digitizes/transmits films, copies films and archives images as needed
Documents clinical activities in a timely, comprehensive and accurate manner while maintaining documentation as required by all regulatory environs and the State of TN
Performs accurate calibration of mammographic equipment
Assist with training of new mammography technologists, assists with scheduling patients, locating films and reports
Assist radiologists with procedures as needed
Maintains a neat, clean and safe environment
Perform quality control testing as indicated
Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures
Adhere to patient privacy act HIPAA, and confidentiality policy at all times
