Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Diagnostic Radiology/Breast Imaging Manager and/or Assistant Chief Technologist, the Mammography Technologist performs a wide range of technical and professional duties using advanced imaging equipment to produce high-quality mammographic images for interpretation by radiologists.

This position delivers compassionate, patient-centered care while ensuring compliance with departmental, organizational, ACR, FDA/MQSA, state, and ARRT standards. Staff may be assigned to work at any Yale New Haven Health Diagnostic Radiology location based on operational needs.

Responsibilities

Mammography Imaging & Technical Excellence

• Perform high-quality and efficient mammographic examinations using age-specific imaging standards.
• Verify patient identity and ordered examination prior to imaging procedures.
• Produce diagnostic-quality images for interpretation by radiologists and review by referring physicians.
• Operate mammography equipment and associated computer systems to obtain optimal technical results.
• Adhere to all ACR, FDA/MQSA, organizational, and departmental guidelines and policies.

Equipment & Quality Assurance

• Conduct daily inspections of mammography equipment and related systems, including:

• Ultrasound equipment (where applicable)

• RIS systems

• PenRad reporting systems

• PACS systems

• Identify and report equipment malfunctions to leadership, service providers, or IT support as appropriate.

• Support quality assurance initiatives and regulatory compliance requirements.

Patient Care & Experience

• Deliver compassionate, age-appropriate patient care focused on safety, comfort, and satisfaction.
• Clearly explain procedures to ensure patient understanding, cooperation, and emotional comfort.
• Address patient concerns and comfort needs before and during examinations.
• Support departmental patient satisfaction goals and contribute to a welcoming, patient- and family-centered environment.
• Introduce yourself and your role, answer patient questions, and ensure a positive overall experience.

Teamwork & Collaboration

• Foster a professional, respectful, and collaborative work environment.
• Work effectively with radiologists, physicians, supervisors, and support staff to coordinate imaging services and scheduling.

Professional Development

• Participate in ongoing education and professional learning activities.
• Maintain all required certifications and continuing education requirements.
• Complete a minimum of five (5) Category A Mammography Continuing Education Credits annually and provide documentation as required for ACR and FDA/MQSA compliance.

Departmental Performance

• Contribute to departmental goals related to patient satisfaction and service excellence.
• Help maintain quality standards and performance metrics established by Diagnostic Radiology leadership.

Qualifications

Education

• Graduate of an AMA-approved Radiologic Technology program required.
• Associate degree preferred.
• Bachelor's degree preferred.

Experience

• Demonstrated technical skills meeting entry-level standards in routine mammography.

Licensure & Certifications

• ARRT Registered Technologist in Radiography and Mammography [RT(R)(M)] required, OR 20 years' of mammography experience as outlined by department requirements.
• Connecticut State License in Radiologic Technology required.
• Current ARRT Mammography certification required.
• CPR certification preferred.

Skills & Competencies

• Proficiency in routine breast imaging and screening mammography procedures.
• Knowledge of PACS and imaging-related computer applications.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
• Commitment to patient-centered care and teamwork.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
• Must meet all driving and Department of Transportation requirements applicable to the position, including maintenance of appropriate licensure, medical certification, and driving record standards as required by Yale New Haven Health.
