The Mammography Technologist works under the supervision of leadership. The mammography technologist works in direct patient care performing screening and diagnostic mammograms. Works under the direction of the Radiologist during breast biopsies, needle localizations and other interventional procedures related to the breast The Mammography Technologist reviews and evaluate images for quality diagnostic purposes. Uses radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure safety of patients.

Essential Technical/Motor Skills

  • Calibrating equipment, answering telephone, fine motor skills, inputting data.

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Caregivers must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in providing appropriate care for patients in all age groups.
  • Obtains patient history, prior images, reports, and any other supportive role information that is needed.
  • Performs/Critiques patient screening and diagnostic mammography examinations requested by patient and/or provider.
  • Prepare patients for procedures. Positions patient and equipment, uses appropriate technical factors to obtain mammogram images.
  • Performs contrast enhanced mammography and automated breast ultrasound for dense tissue evaluation. (St. Joe specific)
  • Stereotactic Core Needle Breast Biopsy: Preparing the patient for the procedure. Setting up sterile field and arrange all necessary instruments and supplies for the radiologist. Assisting the radiologist in skin preparation and needle placement. (St. Joe specific)
  • Review and complete patient exam and charges within the radiology information system.
  • Performs quality assurance procedures and maintains records to accommodate regulatory guidelines.
  • Performs preceptor responsibilities, as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education

  • Completion of a Radiologic Technology program. - Required

Work Experience

  • Six months mammography experience - Preferred

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Technologist (R.T.) - Required Upon Hire
  • Mammography (M) - Required Upon Hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) - Required Upon Hire

Travel Requirements

  • Must be able to travel between various system facilities and off-site locations as needed. - Required
