Job Description

Performs Mammography and any other breast specialized imaging procedures to include Breast Ultrasound using evidenced based best practices. Assists Radiologist with Breast Biopsies, Cyst Aspirations, Needle Localizations, Drainage Tube Placements, Breast Ultrasound and any other special procedures required.

Responsibilities

1. Advanced Technologist related duties and responsibilities:



a. Performs high-quality mammography according to the Women's Imaging



standards of performance.



b. Utilizes radiation safety protection measures.



c. Performs high-quality Specialty Breast Imaging Procedures. Can independently perform Breast Ultrasound with minimal supervision from the Radiologist.



d. Can operate equipment and assist the Radiologist in all types of special procedures, such as; Ultrasound and Stereotactic guided Breast Biopsy, Needle Localization, Cyst Aspiration, Drainage Tube Placement, and any other procedures that are required. Assists with Core Needle Biopsies.



e. Collaborates with Radiologist regarding additional views or other imaging required.



f. Follows all National Patient Safety Goals as established by the hospital and Joint Commission.



g. Assures that all information is correct on the Patient History Sheet as well as in the Radiology Information System and the Hospital Information System. Documents significant facts on the history form and/or in comments as appropriate and tracks patient in the RIS.



h. Follows proper infection control practices as established by hospital and department policies.



i. Conducts appropriate Quality Control procedures on equipment according to manufacturer's recommendation.

2. Customer Service Standards: must use appropriate standards at all times



including but not limited to:



a. Keeps patients and families informed of delays and keeps families



informed of progress during procedures.



b. Treats everyone in a courteous and respectful manner.



c. Greets patients with a smile using appropriate 2 patient identifiers.



d. Maintains confidentiality of patient's information.



e. Handles customer complaints objectively and routes them appropriately.



f. Interacts in a professional and courteous manner with patients.



g. Explains test to patient; engages patient in brief conversation to relax



patient.



h. Shows empathy for patient.



i. Uses discretion when communicating with patients.



j. Attentive to patients and does not keep patients waiting unnecessarily.



k. Properly explains special procedures to patients and obtains consent in



accordance with hospital policy.

3. Quality Assurance and Improvement Duties as assigned:



a. Notifies patient of need to return for additional imaging studies.



b. Notifies physician's office if a biopsy is recommended.



c. Prepares all necessary paperwork for Core Needle Biopsies and/or Needle



Localization.



d. Contacts physician's office, pathology departments, and/or the patient for



follow-up biopsy results on the studies not performed at TCHHN.

4. Breast Self Exam Education: Educates patients on proper self examination by



utilizing various training options:



a. Teaching occurs as needed- includes BSE Video.



b. Answers questions within scope of authority or refers patient to appropriate



staff.



c. Pamphlet / shower card reviewed with patients.

5. Clerical Duties: as needed:



a. Properly prepares all paperwork necessary before performing exam.



b. Obtains patient signature on release form before faxing for prior studies.



c. Answers telephone with proper phone etiquette.



d. Cancels/credits exams properly in RIS.

6. Age Specific Competency Adults:



a. Provides for mobility of patient through any needed physical assistance,



speaks distinctly to patient while maintaining patient's privacy.



b. Maintains awareness of patient's loss of strength and flexibility.



c. Attempts to reduce patient's anxiety and fears.



d. Explains procedure to patient and ascertains patient understands



instructions recognizing the potential of a decrease in mental performance



and speed in older adults.



Geriatrics:



a. Recognizes patient's decreased tolerance to hot/cold and tries provide



patient comfort.



b. Is careful in positioning realizing that skin is fragile.



c. Speaks distinctly, but does not raise voice unless patient has hearing



loss.



d. Maintains patient privacy.



e. Attempts to reduce patient's anxiety and fears.



f. Provides for mobility of patient through any needed physical assistance.



g. Repeats instructions if necessary - recognizing decrease in memory and



slowing of mental functions.



h. Provides assistance in guiding patient into equipment as a result of



decreased vision and depth perception.

7. Job Description additional tasks/responsibilities:



a. In supervisor's absence handles issues pertaining to day to day operations.



b. Access of patient records:



Access to patient records in the course of normal operations to conduct the



business of medical imaging is a responsibility of all designated personnel.



Access of records is limited only to records that are pertinent to the patient's



care or regulatory requirements and only occur when necessary to carry out



duties as part of the Imaging team. Confidentiality and protection of all



records is the responsibility of each individual. This access may occur for



the reasons stated below:



•Pre procedure in preparation for the scheduled exam



•During the procedures in care of the patient



•Post procedure to follow up on care



•To QA processes to insure data is correct



•To conduct retrospective reviews for the purpose of education, research or



for compliance to ODH, MQSA, ACR or other regulatory requirement



•To respond to daily calls from patients, other departments, physicians or



physician's offices requesting the Imaging team to access records to review historical procedure record

Documentation of access must occur where appropriate and feasible in log form, comments in EPIC, HIM or McKesson or other available media/format.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

EDUCATION: Minimum graduate of accredited school of Radiologic Technology required. Preferred A.S. Degree or higher in Radiologic Technology, and/or has completed on the job experience/training which allows the technologist to obtain certification.

YEARS OF EXPERIENCE: Minimum 5 years experience in Mammography required, Minimum 1 year experience in advanced breast imaging procedures required.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:



Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the operation of mammography equipment and other specialty related Mammography, BX, Ultrasound equipment to produce quality examinations. An in depth knowledge of breast anatomy and physiology that is demonstrated through the quality of work produced. Working knowledge of sterile technique. Technologist must earn a minimum of 15 C.E. hours in Mammography to maintain certification and licensure.



5 C.E. hours in Mammography required each year or 15 C.E. hours within a three year period. Must meet the minimum CEU requirements for the advanced imaging specialty.

Certified Mammographer



Advanced Certified in Breast Sonography or other invasive breast certification



Ohio Licensure



CPR Certification - bi-annually
