Under general direction of nursing leadership, the Manager RN position is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing of the operations and staff of the respective department. This position has 24-hour responsibility and accountability for planning, directing, coordinating, and evaluating nursing care to ensure optimal patient health outcomes in their respective department. This position links nursing leadership with nursing care through the application of organizational and nursing service policies, procedures, and care delivery model.
The Manager RN uses the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements to guide leadership and practice.
The Manager RN attains knowledge and competence reflective of current nursing practice; promotes innovation and futuristic thinking by incorporating evidence based practice and research findings.
Responsibilities:(50%)* Directs all patient care activity within the unit, including on-going evaluation, treatment, and discharge planning. Establishes patient care delivery goals and objectives that are consistent with the organization's mission. Also maintains the standards set by the Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN and American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN). Provides direct patient care when needed and appropriate.
(20%)* Designs and conducts the Process Improvement and Standards of Care for the unit including establishing and writing policies and procedures for the unit.
(20%)* Works with families to ensure customer satisfaction, address complaints/concerns, and meet their individual needs.
(10%)* Determines and maintains the staffing and schedule patterns to provide 24 hour/day, 365 days/year coverage of the unit.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES:
Responsible for hiring, disciplining and discharging employees within the unit according to medical center policy.
Performs coaching and counseling of employees within the area according to Medical Center policy.
Evaluates employee work performances and is responsible for annual performance appraisals.
Maintains and develops departmental policies and procedures assuring recommended standards are followed.
Plans, develops, implements, & evaluates educational programs for orientation, staff development, & continued growth of all employees within the department.
Maintains close working relationship with Surgical Services management team to achieve common goals.
Designs and conducts the Process Improvement and Standards of Care for the department.
Takes an active role in the regular nursing management meetings to influence the direction of nursing service.
Actively leads/participates in appropriate meetings.
Plans and develops new programs and facility renovation as appropriate.
Participates on or leads nursing service committees as appointed by the Director of Surgical Services.
Participates on medical staff committees as appropriate.
Assures compliance with regulatory agencies standards such as The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare Services (CMS), the Michigan Department of Public Health (MDPH), etc.
Works with the Operating Room Supply/Purchasing Coordinator, Clinical Value Analysis Coordinator, & the Specialty Coordinators regarding the most cost effective, acquisition, utilization, & in use effectiveness of resources, equipment, & supplies.
Prepares the annual budget for capital and operating budget for sterile processing.
Tracks volume and productivity. Monitors budgetary expenses through monthly reports.
Collaborates with physicians, all levels of nursing management and other departmental personnel in planning for coordinated services to the patient.

Knowledge of nursing practices and procedures as normally acquired through 4 years’ experience working in a Medical Center or similar setting.
Knowledge of nursing leadership as normally acquired through working 2 years’ in a Medical Center or similar setting with involvement in supervision, charge nurse, project implementation, professional development program, shared governance leadership role, or equivalent.Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner.
