Position Summary
The Manager of Choral Activities is a professional staff position responsible for the strategic planning, operational leadership, budget management, marketing, tour management, and production of Concordia College''s nationally recognized choral program. The position provides leadership for the logistical, promotional, and administrative operations of The Concordia Choir, Chapel Choir, Kantorei, and future choral initiatives; oversees domestic and international tours; manages production of the Concordia Christmas Concert; supervises student staff; and assists in advancing the visibility, reputation, recruitment impact, and financial sustainability of Concordia''s choral enterprises.
This position requires independent leadership of multiple high-profile, public-facing operations that directly influence student recruitment, alumni engagement, donor relations, institutional reputation, and the success of nationally recognized choral ensembles. This position reports to the music department chair, collaborates with the choral directors, and is part of a staff team that includes the Instrumental Ensembles Manager, Music Enrollment Coordinator, and Music Administrative Assistant.
Position Responsibilities
Support the mission and vision of Concordia College and demonstrate the competencies defined for this position.
Management of The Concordia Choir, Chapel Choir, Kantorei, and other ensembles that may emerge with program growth (55%)
Serve as operations manager for all of Concordia''s choral ensembles, providing leadership for planning, logistics, communications, marketing, and event execution. Responsibilities include:
Develop and manage annual operating plans, budgets, event timelines, logistics, communications, and promotional strategies for all assigned ensembles.
Serve as the primary operational liaison among conductors, Marketing & Communications, Advancement, Admissions, tour partners, event hosts, alumni, donors, and community partners.
Lead planning and execution of national tours for The Concordia Choir and regional tours for the Chapel Choir, including scheduling, transportation, lodging, meals, contracts, vendor relationships, promotional activities, sponsor relationships, risk-management considerations, and on-site operational leadership.
Travel on all tours, including The Concordia Choir''s annual weekend tour, annual two-week national tour, and international tours, and the Chapel Choir''s regional tour.
Collaborate with a tour company and Director of Choral Activities in planning international tours of The Concordia Choir (every three years; next scheduled for 2028).
Conduct advance planning and pre-tour visits to meet with concert sponsors, hosts, and presenting organizations for national and regional tours.
Lead social media, digital marketing, and audience engagement efforts for all choral ensembles, including creation of audio, video, photographic, and written content when appropriate.
Lead coordination of tour marketing materials, concert programs, promotional campaigns, and audience engagement strategies in collaboration with conductors and Marketing & Communications staff.
Support recruitment-focused promotional initiatives that contribute to student enrollment, alumni engagement, and institutional advancement goals.
Maintain systems and procedures that promote operational excellence across all choral activities.
Production and Promotion of the Concordia Christmas Concerts (15%)
Serve as executive producer, project manager, and operational lead for one of Concordia College''s signature public-facing artistic events. Responsibilities include:
Lead planning, production, and promotion of all Concordia Christmas Concert activities in Moorhead and Minneapolis.
Develop and oversee comprehensive production schedules, logistical plans, staffing structures, and operational workflows for all performances.
Coordinate travel, transportation, lodging, and venue logistics as required.
Collaborate with artistic leadership, Marketing & Communications staff, production personnel, student workers, volunteers, and community partners to ensure successful execution of all performances.
Coordinate, with campus staff and artistic team, the construction and design of the mural and staging area at Concordia and Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis
Develop front-of-house operations and oversee audience services, volunteer teams, and house management procedures.
Direct movement and placement of performing ensembles in consultation with conductors and artistic leadership.
Coordinate concert programs, promotional materials, and audience communications in collaboration with Marketing & Communications staff and the Artistic Director.
Production and Promotion of other important choral events with Director of Choral Activities and conductors (20%)
Lead planning, marketing, budgeting, logistics, and event production for annual choral festivals, camps, concerts, and special projects. Responsibilities include:
Provide production leadership for the High School Choir Festival (one-day annual event)
Provide production leadership for the Vocal Jazz Festival (one or two-day event, once annually)
Manage logistics and operations for Concordia Choir Camp; a week-long experience for high school students in the summer, usually mid-late June.
Lead planning and execution of annual on-campus choral performances
Coordinate logistics and planning for annual choir retreats and related student experiences.
Collaborate with conductors and artistic leadership on concert planning, audience development, and event implementation.
Assist with campus-wide cultural events, community engagement initiatives, and special projects as assigned.
Support strategic initiatives that enhance the visibility, impact, and outreach of Concordia''s choral program.
Management of Concordia Recordings (5%)
Provide strategic oversight of Concordia Recordings and its role in supporting the visibility and financial sustainability of Concordia''s choral enterprises. Responsibilities include:
Develop and implement marketing and sales strategies that maximize audience engagement and revenue generation.
Manage budgets, inventory, production timelines, and distribution processes.
Oversee customer relations and order fulfillment.
Evaluate emerging opportunities in recording, streaming, digital distribution, and merchandise sales.
Collaborate with artistic leadership and marketing personnel to promote recordings and related products.
Support efforts to enhance the visibility and long-term sustainability of Concordia Recordings.
Supervision of Student Workers (5%)
Provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship for student employees supporting choral activities. Responsibilities include:
