Job Description

Job Title: Environmental, Regulatory, Compliance and Utility Manager

Location: Corporate

Department: Facilities

Job Summary: The Environmental, Regulatory, Compliance, and Utility Manager is responsible to develop and implement environmental compliance, fuel equipment compliance, and utility programs which support the corporate strategic plan. This position is also responsible for implementing the Hazardous and Non-Hazardous Waste Disposal program, executes due diligence program for Real Estate site Acquisition, and manages a balanced approach of service quality, service delivery and cost management to execute related services.

Principal Duties:

  • Own and maintain enterprise environmental regulatory compliance across all states in which Wawa operates. Maintain deep knowledge of environmental laws and regulations impacting convenience store operations, fuel and non‑fuel systems, and construction activities. Establish and sustain effective relationships with regulatory agencies and lead resolution of regulatory actions and environmental incidents.
  • Lead the Corporate Environmental Compliance and Due Diligence programs, including environmental review of properties under development and construction. Oversee third‑party and preferred consultant programs and provide technical guidance to Real Estate, Project Engineering, Legal, and Construction partners in evaluating sites, managing investigations, and executing remedial actions as required.
  • Manage environmental permitting and regulatory filings, including the acquisition, tracking, renewal, and maintenance of permits, approvals, and licenses related to fuel and non‑fuel equipment, utility systems, and environmental programs. Ensure timely and accurate completion of all state and federal filings, including fuel compliance requirements.
  • Oversee environmental investigations, remediation activities, and incident closure, including legacy environmental issues associated with first‑generation gasoline sites. Partner with regulatory agencies to achieve closure and participate in development and governance of the corporate environmental reserve budget.
  • Develop, standardize, and continuously improve environmental programs and processes, including Fuel Compliance, Water Supply, Stormwater, Wastewater Treatment Plants, Sustainability, Site (mold, fire, etc) Remediation. Ensure programs are scalable, compliant, and operationally effective.
  • Ensure compliant and responsible for non-solid waste management, including oversight of hazardous and non‑hazardous waste disposal programs to minimize legal, environmental, and long‑term liability while maintaining safe and cost‑effective practices.
  • Provide environmental oversight for construction and engineering activities, including inspections and system reviews for new stores under development, to ensure compliance with federal, state, and company environmental and worker safety requirements.
  • Drive performance management, metrics, and reporting for Environmental and Utility programs. Develop key metrics and dashboards; deliver weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting; and translate data into clear recommendations to improve operational, environmental, and financial performance.
  • Manage budget planning and financial stewardship for environmental programs. Identify cost, usage, and efficiency opportunities; develop and execute improvement plans; and deliver services within approved budgets while supporting overall company financial objectives.
  • Maintain proactive external partnerships and industry engagement, including relationships with regulatory bodies, utilities, consultants, and industry organizations. Represent Wawa through participation in relevant industry panels and networks to inform strategy and best practices.
  • Partner cross‑functionally with Government Relations & Sustainability, Construction, Marketing, Real Estate, Operations Engineering, Strategic Sourcing, and Corporate/Retail Accounting to support enterprise initiatives, regulatory strategy, and profitability goals.
  • Lead and develop l team members, providing strategic direction, performance management, coaching, development planning, corrective action when needed, and participation in hiring and succession planning.
  • Develop and deliver training and communications for store and corporate associates on environmental compliance, regulatory requirements, and related operational responsibilities.
  • Support senior leadership with environmental response efforts, special projects, and enterprise initiatives as requested.

  • Periodic on-call duties effecting night and weekends
  • Ability to travel overnight for multiple days at a time

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors' Degree in, Engineering, , and/or Science or a related field preferred. Master's degree a plus.
  • 8+ years' experience managing associates ,vendors, and external regulatory agency relationships
  • Demonstrated ability to manage field regulatory compliance, environmental, energy and waste, functions, including demonstrated experience working with regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse group of internal and external resources.
  • Proven project management experience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
