JOB TITLE: Manager of Medical Fitness and Wellness POSITION SUMMARY: The Manager of Medical Fitness and Wellness provides strategic and operational leadership for an integrated medical fitness and community wellness facility that includes medically informed fitness programming, a rehabilitation gym, therapeutic rock-climbing wall, group fitness and community classes, and related retail services. This role is responsible for the overall success, safety, financial performance, operational efficiency, and member experience across fitness, climbing, wellness, and retail offerings. While medical fitness is the core identity of the facility, the Manager ensures an inclusive environment that serves both medically complex patients and members and the broader community through high-quality programming, strong operational controls, and meaningful engagement. The Manager partners closely with clinical leaders, fitness professionals, climbing specialists, and community stakeholders to deliver a distinctive, safe, accessible, and medically integrated fitness experience. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Build Trust: We exhibit integrity, transparency and compassion in every interaction. Provide leadership, supervision, and support for fitness professionals, climbing staff, instructors, and support personnel. Reinforce professional, compassionate, and patient-centered interactions across all areas of the facility. Support therapists by coordinating patient flow, equipment availability, and appropriate use of the rehabilitation gym. Ensure adherence to safety protocols, emergency response procedures, infection prevention practices, hospital policies, and accreditation standards. Monitor patient activity in the gym to support safe participation and prevent injury. Maintain documentation related to incidents, equipment inspections, maintenance logs, and compliance requirements. Ensure HIPAA and patient confidentiality standards are consistently upheld. Maintain clear scope-of-practice boundaries between rehabilitation services, medical fitness, and general fitness. Ensure appropriate screening, onboarding, and escalation pathways are in place for medically complex members. Ensure standardized onboarding, assessments, reassessments, and data-driven progression protocols are implemented consistently. Maintain a therapeutic environment that meets hospital safety, infection control, and regulatory requirements. Coordinate equipment maintenance, inspections, and repairs in collaboration with Facilities and Biomedical Services. Ensure climbing staff and other personnel supporting climbing activities are appropriately trained and competent. Enforce participant screening, supervision, and safety procedures for climbing activities and other facility programs. Develop and maintain policies, procedures, and operational documentation related to fitness, rehabilitation, climbing, and wellness operations. Obsess Over Excellence: We have high standards and seek continuous improvement. Oversee daily operations of the rehabilitation gym and medically integrated fitness space, ensuring safe and effective use by patients, members, and community participants. Ensure equipment is clean, safe, functional, accessible, and available to support patient care and fitness programming. Oversee the safe operation and daily readiness of the therapeutic climbing wall. Coordinate inspections, maintenance, and safety checks of climbing equipment and surfaces. Oversee gym retail operations, including therapy-related products, fitness accessories, and approved wellness items. Manage retail inventory, ordering, pricing, product display, and inventory controls. Ensure retail operations comply with hospital policies, financial controls, and infection prevention standards. Track retail sales, usage trends, and inventory levels and provide reports to rehabilitation leadership. Collaborate with leadership to align retail offerings with patient recovery, mobility, fitness, and wellness needs. Coordinate staffing schedules to ensure appropriate coverage across the gym floor, climbing wall, classes, and community programming. Assist with onboarding, training, scheduling, and competency validation for gym staff. Serve as a resource and escalation point for staff questions related to programming, safety, operations, and member experience. Assist rehabilitation leadership with equipment selection, purchasing, replacement, and allocation. Track equipment usage, condition, inventory, and replacement needs. Monitor facility utilization trends and adjust programming, staffing, and equipment allocation accordingly. Ensure equipment and programming support data-driven progression, accessibility, and safe participation across diverse populations. Participate in quality improvement initiatives related to patient outcomes, safety, member experience, and operational efficiency. Track and report key performance indicators, including membership mix, utilization, retention, and contribution margin. Maintain schedules, utilization data, operational reports, and other performance information for the gym. Support budget monitoring, supply ordering, expense control, and financial performance. Assist with accreditation readiness, audits, and regulatory surveys related to rehabilitation and fitness operations. Lead Innovation: We lead with creativity, agility and think bold in our approach. Support the development and implementation of new fitness, wellness, climbing, and community programs. Oversee development and delivery of climbing classes, youth programs, special events, birthday parties, and other community offerings. Support implementation of new programs, technologies, equipment, or service lines that advance medical fitness and wellness. Monitor utilization, membership, participation, and operational trends to identify opportunities for program and service improvements. Use data and performance indicators to inform programming, equipment allocation, staffing, and operational decisions. Collaborate with rehabilitation and clinical leadership to develop innovative approaches that integrate medical fitness with rehabilitation and whole-person wellness. Explore opportunities to expand access and engagement among medically complex patients, members, and community participants while maintaining appropriate safety and clinical boundaries. Collaborate with leadership to evaluate and refine retail offerings based on patient recovery, mobility, wellness, and member needs. Participate in quality improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes, operational efficiency, safety, and customer experience. Deepen Connections: We build strong relationships with our patients, their families and partners in the communities we serve. Collaborate with Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and other clinical teams to support integrated care pathways. Build and maintain relationships with primary care providers, rehabilitation staff, community partners, and other stakeholders. Partner with nutrition and lifestyle professionals to support whole-person health and wellness programming. Support continuity of care by facilitating smooth transitions between inpatient, outpatient, specialty rehabilitation, medical fitness, and community-based services. Represent rehabilitation gym and medical fitness operations in departmental meetings and hospital initiatives. Foster an inclusive environment that supports both medically complex patients and members and the broader community. Promote meaningful engagement through high-quality group fitness, wellness, climbing, and community programming. Collaborate with front desk and membership staff to ensure seamless retail operations and a positive customer experience. Support a welcoming, professional, and patient-centered experience across all facility interactions. Serve as a visible resource for patients, members, staff, and community participants regarding programming, safety, and facility operations. QUALIFICATIONS: Required Education: Associate or Bachelors degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Sciences, or a related field preferred. Preferred Education: Bachelors degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health Sciences, or related fields. Required Licensure: Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification required. Specialty Certification: Certified Exercise Physiologist, ACSM, NSCA, or similar credential preferred. Additional certifications related to climbing, fitness instruction, or medical fitness are desirable. Required Experience: Minimum of 35 years of experience leading gym or fitness center operations, with demonstrated responsibility for retail services, membership growth, and customer experience. Experience with staff leadership, program development, and operational management preferred. Experience in a medical fitness, rehabilitation, or healthcare-adjacent environment strongly preferred. Prior exposure to hospital-based or medically integrated fitness programs is a plus. Skills: Strong understanding of fitness equipment and therapeutic exercise principles. Ability to work effectively with licensed therapists and multidisciplinary clinical teams. Strong organizational, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple operational priorities while maintaining high standards for safety and service. Knowledge of equipment maintenance, facility operations, and fitness programming. Ability to monitor and interpret utilization, membership, financial, and operational data. Ability to work effectively within a regulated healthcare environment. Strong customer service and relationship-building skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with patients, members, staff, clinical teams, and community partners. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Medical fitness and rehabilitation environment with community gym access. Work may occur across rehabilitation, fitness, climbing, retail, group exercise, and community programming areas. Environment may include exposure to patient care areas and medically complex patients. Requires interaction with patients, members, families, clinical staff, fitness professionals, climbing staff, vendors, and community partners. Schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, or extended hours based on therapy operations, programming, special events, and facility needs. May require response to facility or patient emergencies. May require coordination with Facilities, Biomedical Services, and other hospital departments. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities. Ability to lift, move, and position rehabilitation and fitness equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to assist with patient mobility under the direction of a licensed therapist. Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to patient or facility emergencies. Ability to safely navigate and work throughout gym, rehabilitation, climbing, retail, and community programming areas.
